The Unipack MTN Gearsmith 200 lbs dumbbells set is quite similar to the Starring 200 lbs set. The main difference between the two is that the Starring comes with slightly thicker bars, with 1.125″ (2.8) sleeves, while the Unipack MTN feature standard 1″ (2.5 cm) bars.
These dumbbells feature a classic adjustment system, with threaded bars and collars. They’re quite affordable compared with most quick adjustment dumbbells, such as the Bowflex 1090. In fact, this dumbbell set is approx. 60% cheaper than the Bowflex.

Overall construction
The first aspect to be clarified regarding the Unipack MTN Gearsmith 200 lbs dumbbells is that they come as a set of two, 100 lbs each. Differently put, you will receive 2 handles, 4 collars, and 24 weight plates. The set is shipped in 3 boxes, approx. 70 lbs each.
The only non-metal elements within the construction of these dumbbells are the rubber gaskets that fit onto the bar stoppers, in order to prevent plates from rattling. Other than these, every single piece is all-metal, no plastic insertions, no rubber or plastic covers. This being said, even though they’re not some of the most expensive adjustable dumbbells, they’re extremely sturdy, and you can basically use them for just about any type of exercise that can be achieved with dumbbells.
The dumbbell bars are steel-made, with knurled handles in order to provide a secure grip. They feature a durable chrome finish which prevents them from rusting due to sweat or moisture. This chrome finish is pretty durable as well, the bars can take a lot of abuse before it peeling off.
The set includes classic cast iron plates, coated with anti-corrosive, black paint. It’s actually an oil paint which not only doesn’t allow the plates to rust, it also doesn’t stain your hands or clothing, like the rubber finish on other types of weights. It also doesn’t have an unpleasant odor like latex covered weights.
The bars are 1″ (2.5 cm) standard, and the supplied weight plates also feature 1″ (2.5 cm) holes. The biggest weight plates are 8″ (20.3 cm) in diameter, dimension which actually gives the maximum width of the dumbbells.
Adjustment system and increments
The Unipack MTN Gearsmith dumbbells feature the same adjustment system as the Starring or Yes4All. You simply load the weight plates onto the bars, secure the collars on the threaded sleeves, and start exercising. It’s not exactly the fastest adjustment system, but on the other hand it’s extremely secure.
The dumbbell bars weigh 5 lbs (2.26 kg) each. And considering the fact that you’ll get 4 x 2.5 lbs (1.13 kg), 4 x 5.0 lbs (2.26 kg), and 16 x 10 lbs (4.5 kg) plates, it’s pretty obvious that you can adjust weight in increments of 5 lbs (2.26 kg) up to 100 lbs (45.3 kg) for each dumbbell. Thus, each dumbbell basically replaces 18 hex (or non-adjustable) dumbbells, the set saving you a lot of space.
The Pros
- Sturdy, durable construction, without any plastic parts;
- Versatile free weights, easy to adjust, great for alternating exercises that require different weights;
- Space-savvy. Each dumbbell basically replaces 18 fixed weight dumbbells;
- They basically cover the full range of exercises that you can achieve with dumbbells;
- You can have an off-set weight for each dumbbell, for more intense workouts;
- Durable finish both on the plates and handles;
- Weight range between 5 and 100 lbs, great for users of all levels;
- Knurled handle for a secure grip.
The Cons
- Adjustment takes a bit long compared to Bowflex or PowerBlock dumbbells, which may be annoying if you follow various workout programs, such as P90X.
Summary
If you’re looking for classic and affordable adjustable dumbbells with a high weight range, the Unipack MTN Gearsmith 200 lbs set is definitely one that you can put on your list.
