The Funcode adjustable dumbbells have a similar design to the Flybird 25 lbs dumbbell. They’re selectorized dumbbells, but the whole handle is the selector, unlike the Bowflex models which have a separate selector for each dumbbell head.
Needless to say, the core of each dumbbell is made of steel. However, both the weight plates and the handle have covers made of durable thermoplastic material. The grip has a convex shape for improved ergonomics. It is also textured for improved contact.
Like most other selectorized adjustable dumbbells, the Funcode LZDUMBBELL-2222 are fairly large. They are actually larger (at least lengthwise), than most standard adjustable dumbells with cast iron or vinyl plates. When stored in its tray, each dumbbell is approx. 17.72″ (45 cm) long, and 8.67″ (22 cm) wide. This shouldn’t be a major inconvenience, but as a general idea, a short user may need to keep their arms a bit more extended when performing chest presses.
Of course, the main advantage of this type of dumbbells is that you can easily adjust their weight without having to remove collars and manually load and unload plates. The selector handle offers the possibility to quickly select the desired number of plates. Also, the thermoplastic casing of each plate prevents it from catching rust.
Nonetheless, just like any other adjustable dumbbells of this type, the Funcode models are a bit more fragile than the standard adjustable dumbbells with cast iron plates. Although they’re pretty sturdy, they may sustain damage if dropped. Also, dumbbell push-up exercises with these dumbbells aren’t recommended.
Adjustment system and increments
The Funcode LZDUMBBELL-2222 adjustable dumbbells are equipped with a twistlock adjustment system. The weight selector is basically the handle. You simply place each dumbbell in its tray making sure that the plates are correctly aligned in their slots, twist the handles and choose the desired weight. Once the weight is selected for each dumbbell, you can lift it up and commence the exercise. The handle should pick the corresponding number of plates to the selected weight.
Similar to most other dumbbells with a selector handle, the Funcode dumbbells can only pick up an even number of plates. In other words, when you twist the handle, it will select the same number of plates on each head, and the weight of the dumbbell will correspond to the one indicated on the red rings of each head. Due to this aspect, you won’t be able to create an off-set weight. This shouldn’t be a major inconvenience, though.
The dumbbell has 8 weight plates. Each one weighs 2.2 lbs (1 kg) while the handle without any plates on it weighs 6.6 lbs (3 kg). The adjustment increments are6.6 lbs (3 kg), 15 lbs (6.8 kg), 25 lbs (11.3 kg), 33 lbs (14.9 kg), and 44 lbs (19.9 kg).
The Funcode adjustable dumbbells do not include too many accessories. The only notable ones are the adjustment and storage trays. These are pretty necessary to the quick and hassle-free weight adjustment because they keep the weight plates aligned and tight so you can quickly twist the handles and select the desired weight.
The trays are made from the same sturdy thermoplastic material as the casings of the plates. They offer a pretty high tensile and compressive strength, so they should hold the dumbbells with no problem. They are not meant to support the user’s weight though, during dumbbell push-up exercises, though. As we’ve mentioned above, dumbbell push-ups are not recommended for any selectorized dumbbells.
