Frame construction

The Sunny Health & Fitness Energy Flex SF-T7724 treadmill features a frame made of rectangular steel tubing. However, it also integrates several parts made from ABS plastic. For example, the side rail covers, the motors cover, the console casing, and several other small covers are made from a durable thermoplastic material. All the steel tubes are coated with a corrosion-resistant paint finish. The color used is light gray, this being the only color available for this treadmill, at least for the moment.

The machine is not too large. With all the parts assembled, it is approx. 69″ (175 cm) long, and 30″ (76 cm) wide, while its highest point is the top of the console which reaches approx. 54.5″ (138 cm) above the floor level. It is recommended, though, to allow a few feet of clearance all around the machine, at least two feet on each side, and three feet at the rear, for safe usage.

This Sunny Health & Fitness treadmill is foldable. Its deck can be folded up which not only gives you the possibility to save some space when it is not in use, it also allows you to easily vacuum underneath it. The folding mechanism uses a hydraulic cylinder which slowly lowers the deck when unfolded. Also, with the deck folded, the unit’s footprint becomes 44.75″L x 30″W (114 x 76 cm), while its height gains a few inches.

The treadmill is fairly heavy as well. Its net weight is approx. 125.7 lbs (57 kg). This being said, the packaged unit may require two people for transport. However, once it is assembled, it can easily be moved by only one person as its front base has transport wheels.

Deck construction

The Sunny SF-T7724 offers a running surface of 51.5″ (131 cm) long, and 18″ (46 cm) wide. This being said, it should be able to accommodate comfortably, users up to 6’2″ (188 cm). Taller persons should still be able to use this machine but they may not benefit from a complete range of motion if running at high speeds.

The belt has multiple layers with a rubberized top layer in order to provide a superior grip for your footwear. The rollers are crowned to increase the lifespan of the belt. They integrate sealed bearings for a smooth motion.

The unit’s deck is pretty durable. It is rated for a maximum user weight limit of 240 lbs (109 kg) which is not bad for a home-use treadmill. It integrates four pairs of cushioning elements and the deckboard itself also has a bit of flex. Therefore, a run on this treadmill generates considerably less impact on your joints and back than a run on asphalt or concrete.

Last but not least, the step-up height of the deck is approx. 7″ (17 cm). The incline adds a few inches at the front of the deck when set to the maximum level. Therefore, it is recommended to place and use this treadmill in a room with a ceiling that is at least 15″ (38 cm) higher than your own height.

Incline system

The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-T7724 treadmill is equipped with a motorized incline system. This means that you will need to connect the machine to a power source in order to adjust the incline. It also means that you can adjust the incline during your workout, and the console can also adjust the incline automatically if an incline program is selected.

The incline system consists of a small lift integrated under the front section of the deck, and a motor (different from the drive motor). Therefore, when you adjust the incline from the console, or when an incline program is in use, the motor powers the lift and elevates or lowers the front part of the deck.

It’s important to mention, though, that with the incline set to 0, the machine’s running surface is not perfectly horizontal. It has approx. 1.65° of incline. Also, the treadmill only offers incline possibilities. You cannot decline the belt, in order to have it higher at the rear, as is the case for the NordicTrack Commercial 2450 treadmill.

The machine’s incline system has 15 levels, with a range from 1.65° (2.9%) to 6.1° (10.7%). The console has buttons for gradual incline adjustments, but also for quick incline selection for levels 3, 6, 9, and 12. The treadmill also has controls for gradual incline adjustment integrated into the left handrail.

Drive motor

The Sunny Health & Fitness Energy Flex is an electric treadmill and requires a 110V external power source. It comes with a power cord featuring a U.S. standard plug. The connector for the power cord is at the front of the deck next to the ON/OFF switch.

The machine’s motor is similar in power to the motor of the FYC JK43-5 treadmill. It is a 2.5 HP peak power motor designed to provide a decent performance without overheating even if the user is close to the specified maximum weight limit. It is recommended, though, to let the machine rest for at least 10 minutes after every two hours of use.

The treadmill offers a speed range between 0.6 MPH and 10 MPH. The speed adjustment increments are 0.1 MPH so you can easily adjust your pace when changing the speed. The console has controls for gradual speed adjustment, and quick speed selection controls for 2 MPH, 4 MPH, 6 MPH, and 8 MPH. The right handrail of the machine also integrates gradual speed controls.

The machine’s motor does not generate too much noise when in use. However, depending on your running technique, your weight, floor type, running equipment, and other factors, your cadence may generate more or less noise. So, it can definitely be heard when in use. But as a general idea, the noise of the motor should not cover the sound of a TV set on a moderate volume level.

Console

The Sunny SF-T7724 treadmill is equipped with a pretty standard console. It features an LCD display with a blue LED backlight divided into 6 sub-sections. It shows time, speed, incline, distance, calories, pulse, as well as the selected program and the segments of the program. Speed and distance are by default set to English units, but the console has the option to convert them to metric units. The pulse reading function is grip only; the machine cannot read your pulse from a wireless transmitter so you will have to hold on to the sensors integrated into the side rails.

The console does not have online connectivity and it is not compatible with any fitness apps. However, it has plenty of programs to keep you motivated. To begin with, it has the Manual Mode which gives you the possibility to adjust the speed and incline manually as you run. Next, there are 16 pre-set programs with different segment layouts. Each one has 16 segments. All of them control both the speed and incline.

The console also has three user-defined programs, countdown modes, and a BMI calculator. The user-defined programs allow you to personalize each workout segment and create your own custom workouts. The countdown modes allow you to select a workout target for time, distance, and calories; if a target is selected for one of these metrics, the console will count down from that value until it reaches zero. The BMI function calculates your body mass index based on your age, gender, height, and weight.

Other notable console features are the Bluetooth speakers, the device holder, and the bottle holders. The speakers are placed one on each side of the console keypad. They connect to your phone via Bluetooth so you can play your music through them. There is also an AUX port and a microphone port, so you can use headphones and a microphone to talk on the phone through the console.

The device holder consists of a small shelf under the console display. The bottle holders are moulded into the console dashboard; they’re placed near the speakers, one on each side of the console.

Assembly and Maintenance

This Sunny Health & Fitness treadmill doesn’t require too much assembly. It comes essentially pre-assembled and folded. All you have to do is unfold it, and secure the two upright bars in the required position, as well as the console. This shouldn’t take more than 20-30 minutes of your time. All the necessary tools are included and the manual provides clear assembly instructions.

Once the machine is assembled, you will have to lubricate the belt with the provided lubricant. After this, it should be lubricated every 1-2 months depending on how often it is used. Another maintenance aspect is keeping the machine clean, especially the belt, to prevent dirt or small objects from being caught in the motor. It’s also recommended to periodically inspect your treadmill, to make sure that all the parts hold tight in their places and it still functions properly.
