Although the NordicTrack Speed Weights (also known as the NordicTrack Select-A-Weight 55 lbs dumbbells) have received a fair share of negative reviews from users over the few years due to plates falling off, they still stand at a 4-star rating at least on most websites. Also, their price has been reduced considerably since their launch, so at the moment, you can actually get them for approx. $100 less than the Bowflex SelectTech 552.
The set includes two dumbbells with their trays. They’re fairly decent selectorized dumbbells, but just like any other similar models, they aren’t as durable as standard dumbbells.

Overall construction
First of all, like most other selectorized dumbbells, the NordicTrack Speed Weights are fairly large. The specified dimensions for them are 27.59″L x 22.25″W (70 x 56 cm). That’s a bit too much. These dimensions probably refer to the dumbbells plus the rack (which is not included). However, they’re still approx. 18″L x 12″W (46 x 30 cm), and therefore, a shorter person may have to execute ampler movements during certain exercises, such as dumbbell bench presses, or shoulder presses.
In terms of constructions, the NordicTrack Speed Weights feature steel handles and steel weight plates, but they’re all encased in hard ABS plastic. Due to this aspect, they are not as durable as regular dumbbells with cast iron plates and collars. Thus, it’s not recommended to use them for pushups or any exercise that puts pressure on them or drop them on a hard surface. This may cause damage to the plates.
These NordicTrack selectorized dumbbells have different construction than the Bowflex SelectTech or the Merax Deluxe models. The thinnest weight plates enter the two larger discs that are directly attached to the handles. For these, each dumbbell head has a selector. The rest of the plates attach via pins.
As we’ve mentioned above, this NordicTrack dumbbell set includes two dumbbells. Each one has a maximum weight of 55 lbs (25 kg). Each dumbbell includes its own tray. These trays are made of durable ABS material. They play an important role in the dumbbell weight adjustment as well; they keep the plates aligned and hold them together for a correct selection. Also, the trays have corresponding weight markings near each weight plate.
Adjustment system and weight increments
Each dumbbell has 12 weight plates. Four of them are very thin, 1.25 lbs (0.56 kg) each. These offer the possibility of micro-adjustments. They enter the two main heads of each handle; each head has a small selector on its inner side for 0 lbs, 2.5 lbs (1.1 kg), and 5 lbs (2.2 kg). The two selectors of each handle are independent. Therefore, you can select 2.5 lbs on one side for the handle to grab only one thin plate, and 5 lbs, or 0 lbs on the other if you want to create an off-set weight.
The rest of the larger plates, eight in number for each dumbbell, weigh approx. 5 lbs (2.2 kg) each. They have a different selector. It consists of a pop-pin attached to a median rod that goes through the main handle, one for each side of the dumbbell. So, in order to select the larger plates, you simply have to pull the pin up, move it to the desired plate and push it all the way back in. Similar to the smaller plates selectors, these are also independent. For example, you can select two larger weight plates on one side, and three on the other if for some reason you want to exercise with an off-set weight.
Each dumbbell offers 15 different weight settings. These are: 10, 12.5, 15, 20, 22.5, 25, 30, 32.5, 35, 40, 42.5, 45, 50, 52.5, and 55 lbs (4.5, 5.6, 6.8, 9.0, 10.2, 11.3, 13.6, 14.7, 15.8, 18.1, 19.2, 20.4, 22.5, 23.8, 24.9 kg). This being said, each dumbbell replaces 15 non-adjustable dumbbells.
The Pros
- Quick adjustment system, great for exercise combinations that require different dumbbell weights;
- Space-saving – 30 dumbbells in only one set;
- Excellent weight range (from 10 to 55 lbs);
- 2.5 lbs and 5 lbs adjustment increments;
- Sleek design which can also be a motivation factor;
- ABS padded handles with a convex shape for a comfortable grip;
- Storage/adjustment trays included.
The Cons
- They’re more fragile than regular dumbbells, so they’re meant to use with care;
- Slightly larger than regular dumbbells.
Summary
The NordicTrack Speed Weights set includes two adjustable dumbbells with their storage trays. Each dumbbell offers an adjustment range between 10 lbs and 55 lbs. They offer 15 adjustment settings with 2.5 and 5.5 lbs adjustment increments. They’re perfect for anyone who needs to alternate different weights during their workout routine without loading and unloading plates. They basically replace a set of 30 standard dumbbells.
How do I put the plates back in correctly if they fall out? The plates except for the small one they are all the same size, height and depth is that correct?
Please respond this is stopping my workout completely!!!!
Thank you kindly,
Chris nelson
First of all, the weight plates should not fall from the selector (or the handle). If that happens, either the mechanism or the plates are damaged.
Second of all, for each side of one dumbbell, only the very thin plates (the ones that are closer to the handle) are the same. The other, thicker ones are not equal, each one needs to be in its own slot, in the selection tray.
