The Merax Deluxe are some of the best selectorized dumbbells available at the moment. They actually offer a better construction than the Bowflex SelectTech (or at least better than the first models of Bowflex SelectTech) as they have metallic selector plates and painted weight plates, without plastic elements.

First of all, it is important to mention that the Merax Deluxe 71.5 lbs dumbbell set includes two dumbbells, each one with a total weight of 71.5 lbs (32.5 kg). They can be ordered as one dumbbell, as a set of two with the storage trays, or as a set of two with the trays plus a metallic stand. In this review, we’re going to address the set that includes the two dumbbells with their storage trays, without the metallic stand.
With regards to their construction, the Merax Deluxe 71.5 lbs are mostly made of steel. They also have several hard ABS plastic parts, but these are only the caps of the selector elements. The rest of the dumbbells including the handles, the weight plates, and the internal selector discs are made of steel.
It’s important to mention that even though the weight plates and their internal selector discs are made of steel, and the dumbbells have a pretty solid construction, they’re still not as solid as standard dumbbells. In other words, if you drop them on a hard floor from a few feet, their mechanism may break.
Since they are selectorized adjustable dumbbells, the Merax Deluxe are slightly larger than most of the classic adjustable dumbbells with threaded collars, like the Yes4All. The length of one handle is approx. 16.5″ (~42 cm), while the diameter of the larges weight plate is approx. 8″ (20.3 cm). This being said, if you’re a shorter person and want to perform horizontal chest press exercises, you will have to press your arms at a slightly wider angle than perfectly aligned with your shoulders. This shouldn’t be an inconvenience, though; even more, it should lead to a more consistent workout as the motion requires extra control.
As we’ve mentioned above, the included weight plates are all metallic (steel alloy), coated with a durable paint finish. The selector discs attached to the handles are also painted; however, the paint on a portion of their edges is intentionally scratched during manufacturing for a better connection between the discs and the plates.
The Merax Deluxe 71.5 lbs dumbbells come with a set of support trays. These trays actually play an important role in the adjustment of the dumbbells; they’re not only for storage. They are designed to keep the plates aligned so that they correctly connect to the handle. The trays are made of heavy-duty ABS material; they elevate the dumbbells by approx. 2″ (5 cm).
Last but not least, the Merax Deluxe 71.5 lbs dumbbells are equipped with rubberized handles. They have a convex shape in order to provide a superior and comfortable grip.
Adjustment system and increments
As we’ve mentioned above, the maximum weight of each Merax Deluxe dumbbell is 71.5 lbs (32.5 kg). Each dumbbell can be loaded with a maximum of 10 weight plates. The set includes the following number of weight plates:
- 4 x 2.75 lbs (1.25 kg)
- 8 x 5.50 lbs (2.50 kg)
- 8 x 8.25 lbs (3.75 kg)
The handles weigh 11 lbs (5.0 kg) each. Therefore, the starting weight for each dumbbell is 11 lbs. Up from this minimum weight, the weight adjustment increments are 5.5 lbs (2.5 kg). Each dumbbell has 24 different adjustment settings. So, the set basically replaces 24 sets of classic, non-adjustable dumbbells.
Each dumbbell has two adjustment knobs, one on each end. Each knob has 24 weight increments. It’s also important to mention here, that the adjustment increments are specified in kilograms on the adjustment knobs.
The two adjustment knobs are connected and move simultaneously. For example, if you select 17.5 kg on one side, the knob on the other side will show the same weight. Therefore, 17.5 kg will be the weight that the handle will pick up.
The dumbbells are fairly easy to adjust. First of all, you will have to place all the weight plates in their trays, each one in its corresponding spot, so they are correctly aligned. Then, you have to insert the handle in the slots of the plates. Each handle has a safety lock (button) on one of its ends. So, when turning the end knobs to select a certain weight, you will have to press and hold the safety button. Once you have selected the desired dumbbell weight, release the safety button and you can safely pick up the dumbbell at the desired weight.
Considering that both selector knobs of each dumbbell move simultaneously, they’re designed to pick up an equal amount of plates. This way, you will benefit from a balanced weight. However, you can still create an off-set weight for each dumbbell if you want. In order to do that, you can simply remove two weight plates from each tray before inserting the handle.

The Merax Deluxe 71.5 lbs dumbbell set includes two adjustable dumbbells with their storage trays. Each dumbbell offers an adjustment range between 11 lbs and 71.5 lbs.
