Frame construction

The Fitness Reality Squat Rack 2809 features a pretty sturdy frame made of 2 x 2 inch square steel tubing. All the steel parts and accessories included with the rack have a durable, corrosion-resistant paint finish. The color used for the two upright bars is gray, while the base bars, j-hooks, spotter arms, etc. have a black paint finish. These are the only colors available for this rack.

The 2809 squat rack is not extremely bulky. It is meant for use with barbells that have at least 46″ (~116 cm) collar-to-collar grip width. It is approx. 50.4″ (128 cm) long, and 50″ (127 cm) wide so it offers plenty of inner space for all kinds of exercises. It is recommended, though, to leave at least two feet of clearance on each side of the rack, and at least a few feet of clearance at its front for the correct execution of all exercises.

The top bar of the frame can be used as a pull-up/chin-up bar. Although it does not have extra grips, it does have two height adjustment positions; you can have it at 78″ (198 cm) or at 81.3″ (206 cm). This being said, the rack can fit in a room with a 7′ (213 cm) ceiling with a bit of remaining clearance above for the correct execution of pull-ups.

The squat rack itself is not extremely heavy. Its net weight is 90.7 lbs (41 kg). It comes in several boxes and can be carried and assembled by one person with no problem.

The rack’s upright bars feature 19 adjustment holes for the j-hooks and spotter bars. The unit’s base bars have several adjustment holes for the included resistance band post. Also, the rack has a reinforcement bar that connects the two back parts of the base bars. This reinforcement bar can be used for push-ups.

Bench construction

The Fitness Reality 2809 power rack comes with the Fitness Reality 2804 adjustable bench. Needless to say, the bench is built on a steel frame and offers a pretty impressive weight capacity of 800 lbs (363 kg). All its steel tubes are coated with a gray paint finish.

The rear leg of the bench has 5 adjustment positions plus the rear stopper which offers a decline position for the backrest. Its front leg offers two adjustment positions which basically doubles the total of adjustment positions of the bench. Differently put, the FR 1000 bench offers 12 adjustment positions, the backrest offering -20° decline and up to 80° of incline.

A foot stopper accessory comes with the bench. There are four attachment positions for it on the front leg of the bench. This can be quite useful for exercises that involve heavy weights, or for ab crunches and sit-ups.

The seat pad dimensions are 15.3″W x 14.5″L (38.8 x 36.8 cm). The backrest is fairly large; it is approx. 10″ (25.4 cm) wide, and 33.5″ (85 cm) long. Both pads integrate approx. 1.5″ (2 cm) of foam padding for extra comfort. Also, they have durable vinyl covers that are sweatproof and easy to maintain.

The legs of the bench can be folded and it can be stored vertically to save space. Also, its rear stabilizer is equipped with a set of small wheels that facilitate its relocation. But nonetheless, the bench is not too heavy; its net weight is only 35 lbs (~16 kg).

Other parts and accessories

First of all, this Fitness Reality power rack set does not include a barbell or weight plates. Therefore, you will have to purchase them separately or use the ones you already have.

In terms of accessories, the FR 2809 squat rack comes with a resistance band attachment featuring two standard D-handles and a small post that can be inserted either into the holes of the base bars or the holes of the spotter bars. Needless to say, this accessory allows the execution of various exercises, such as resistance band curls, presses, extensions, etc.

Just like any other power rack, the FR 2809 a set of two spotter bars and a set of two j-hooks. They are rated for a maximum weight limit of 800 lbs (363 kg) and users have reported them to hold at least 500 lbs (226 kg) with no problem. The spotter bars are 19.5″ (49.5 cm) long. As we’ve mentioned above, they have attachment holes for the resistance band post. Also, both the spotter bars and the j-hooks have a layer of high-density rubber on top to prevent paint chipping and reduce noise.

A Landmine Swivel attachment is included with this Fitness Reality squat rack as well. This element attaches to the side base bars of the rack. It’s designed to work with both 2″ Olympic bars or 1″ Standard bars. It offers the possibility to perform a wide array of Landmine exercises such as twists, pulls, presses, lunges, etc.

Last but not least, the rack also includes two weight plate holders. They can be attached to the holes of the upright bars. They are slightly slanted to hold the plates better. They are 1″ in diameter, so they can be loaded with either Standard or Olympic plates.

Assembly and Maintenance

The Fitness Reality is a pretty simple, standard squat rack, without too many parts to assemble, like a Smith machine or a weight stack pulley machine. Therefore, its assembly is not too complicated and should not take more than two hours, including the bench. You will basically have to put together the base of the trainer first, then add the upright bars, close it with the top push-up bar, and then attach the rest of the accessories. The manual provides fairly clear assembly instructions and a set of basic tools is also included.

Once the rack and the bench are assembled, their maintenance doesn’t require much. It’s recommended to periodically check their joints, anchor points, and bolts, and re-tighten them if needed. Also, if the swivel landmine element begins to squeak, some light lubrication oil should solve the problem.
