Frame construction

The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-BH6802 features a classic construction. Needless to say, all the bars in its construction are made of steel tubing. The main upright bars, as well as the base bars, the support pegs and the exercise band attachment elements, feature a gray paint finish, while the J-hooks, catch bars and the pull-up bar have a black paint finish. The paint finish on all the parts is corrosion-resistant, but the unit is made for indoor use only; if stored and used outside, its bolts and other small parts can still catch rust.

Starting at the top, the unit is equipped with a curved pull-up bar. This element also has knurled grips in order to provide maximum hand adherence during all the exercises. The height of the pull-up bar is 85″ (216 cm) above floor level. Therefore, the unit won’t fit in a room with a 7′ (213 cm) ceiling. Plus, it is recommended to assemble and store the rack in a room with a ceiling that allows at least one foot of clearance above the pull-up bar, so that you can perform complete pull-up exercises without any danger of hitting your head on the ceiling.

The pull-up bar has an impressive weight capacity of 500 lbs (227 kg). This being said, it gives you the possibility to perform weighted pull-ups or chin-ups.

The rack’s main side bars feature 30 adjustment notches. These provide plenty of flexibility when it comes to attaching the barbell holders and safety bars. Therefore, the rack can accommodate users of all sizes.

The connection points between the vertical bars and the base bars involve four durable bolts each. The top pull-up bar assembly also connects to the side bars via two bolts on each side. These being said, the rack provides a very sturdy structure, without wobbling during exercises.

The base part of the frame features two anchor points on each side. Depending on the exercises that you perform, the weights that you use, and your own weight, the unit may or may not require being bolted to the floor, especially if the support pegs are loaded with weight plates. However, anchoring the rack is recommended; this way, you will achieve maximum stability and sturdiness for any exercise and any weight load (up to the max. weight supported).

Last but not least, the Sunny SF-BH6802 Power and Squat Rack is not an extremely large unit. It’s 42″ (107 cm) deep, and 47″ (120 cm) wide, while the space between the bars is approx. 42″ (106 cm), leaving enough room for all exercises and users of all sizes. However, the unit is meant for usage with 7.2′ (2.2 m) Olympic barbell. Therefore, you should leave at least 4′ of clearance all around the unit, for ease of access and the safe execution of any exercise.

Other parts

The first parts to mention here are the J-hooks and the safety bars (or spotter bars). These are designed to support loads up to 880 lbs (400 kg). They can easily be attached or removed or removed from the upright bars. Each J-hook and safety bar has a rubberized top in order to reduce the noise of dropping a heavy barbell and also diminish abrasion.

The J-hooks are approx. 4″ (10 cm) long. Conversely, the spotter bars are 16″ (40.6 cm) long, offering plenty of safety length, ease of mind and safety assurance when squatting a heavily loaded barbell.

The rear corners of the base frame feature two small upright bars with 2″ (5 cm) support pegs for Olympic plates. These don’t have adapters and cannot be loaded with Standard, 1″ (2.5 cm) plates. Their weight capacity isn’t specified. However, they’re approx. 11″ (28 cm) long and can definitely support more than 100 lbs (45 kg) each.

The front, lateral sections of the base frame feature three attachment points (each) for elastic bands. Therefore, you can add resistance to pull-ups or other exercises. Resistance bands are not included with this Sunny squat rack, though.

One last element to mention here is the Landmine Swivel attached to the rear base of the frame. This element gives you the possibility to attach a weighted barbell to it, in order to perform dynamic exercises for the core muscles and balance improvement. The list of exercises that you can perform on the Landmine Swivel includes trunk rotation, “truck driver”, landmine squat, pivot press, and more. The swivel can rotate 360° offering enough range of motion for users of all sizes.

Possible Exercises

Since it’s a power and squat rack, it goes without saying that the main exercise for this unit is the squat. However, the list of exercises that can be performed on it covers more than 35. Among them, we can count:

  • Pull-ups
  • Wide grip pull-ups

Assembly and Maintenance

The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-BH6802 power and squat rack is not an extremely complex home gym, like the BodyCraft Galena Pro, for example. Therefore, it’s assembly is far from being complicated. As a general idea, you will first have to put together its base, then attach the two upright bars, connect them at the top with the pull-up bar, then add the extra elements such as the weight plate supports, the resistance band attachments, the landmine swivel element, the J-hooks, and the safety bars. This shouldn’t take longer than an hour, an hour and a half tops. The manual provides excellent step-by-step assembly instructions, and the tools needed for the assembly are included.

Depending on how much you want to lift and the exercises you want to perform, the unit may require anchoring to the floor. For this, you will have to drill 4 holes to correspond to the base anchor points of the unit, into the floor or pavement.

Once the unit is assembled, maintenance doesn’t require much. It’s recommended to periodically check its joints, anchor points, and bolts, and re-tighten them if needed. Also, if the swivel landmine element begins to squeak, some light lubrication oil should solve the problem.

Summary

The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-BH6802 is an excellent power and squat rack for home use. It has an impressive weight capacity of 880 lbs (400 kg) for its safety bars and 500 lbs (226 kg) for its pull-up bar. It’s equipped with several extra elements which can add a lot of diversity to each one of your workouts. For example, it has a landmine swivel element, and base connection points for resistance bands. In all, it’s a pretty decent, durable, and versatile squat rack, available at an affordable price.

What are the upright dimmensions? Are them 2×2″? and the holes are 1″ diameter right?

    1. The height of the two upright bars is 84″ (the pull-up bar is a bit higher; it reaches 85″). The two upright bars and the base bars are a bit thicker than 2″ x 2″. They are 2 ¼” x 2 ¼”. The adjustment holes on the two upright bars are 1″ in diameter and the distance between them is also 1″.
