Frame construction

The ECHANFIT R49 Pro features a steel frame combining rectangular and cylindrical tubes in its construction. All the steel parts are coated with a rust-resistant paint finish. The color used is gray. Also, the front part of the unit that holds the drive and resistance elements is concealed by a set of large guards made from thermoplastic material.

There are actually two versions for the ECHANFIT R49 Pro, a black one, and an orange one. They’re both the same in terms of features. This post refers to the black version.

The ECHANFIT R49 Pro rower is a fairly small fitness machine compared with other similar models. Its assembled footprint is 64.6″L x 16.3″W (164 x 41 cm). However, it still is recommended to leave at least two feet of clearance on each side of the rail and at the rear for ease of access. The exact length of the rail is not specified, but ECHANFIT recommends this rower for users up to 6’3″ (190 cm). Also, its maximum user weight limit is 300 lbs (136 kg).

The rower does not have a folding design. However, it can be stored vertically if necessary, resting on its front stabilizer and a small rubber pad integrated on the front part of the drive casing.

The unit is fairly light. It only weighs approx. 55 lbs (25 kg) so it can easily be carried and assembled by only one person. Also, once it is assembled, it can easily be moved as its front base integrates a set of small wheels.

Seat and other parts

The ECHANFIT R49 Pro is equipped with a pretty comfortable seat. Its top section features a cushion with approx. 1.6″ (4 cm) of foam padding in order to reduce the impact on your tailbone. The cushion has a durable vinyl cover which is also sweatproof.

The seat frame is made of steel. It integrates three sets of wheels. Two of them slide on top of the rail while the third one closes the seat at the bottom for extra stability. The wheels integrate ball bearing and have an outer rubber layer for reduced noise and for a smooth seat travel. The rail also has two sets of bumpers at the front and at the rear to prevent the seat from sliding more than necessary.

The unit’s rail is slanted forward. Due to this design, the machine provides a slightly better workout for the legs. This also means that the seat is a bit higher when close to the rear end of the rail. Its maximum height is approx. 12″ (30 cm) above the floor.

This ECHANFIT rower is equipped with a set of large footrests. They attach to a curved steel bar that connects to the bottom front section of the frame. The pedal trays are made from durable ABS material. They are non-adjustable. They have heel guards, a textured surface, and adjustable straps in order to provide the necessary foot stability during rowing.

The unit’s footrests are fixed on their axis. They do not pivot or change their angle. They’re set at an angle of approx. 45° in order to provide an optimal positioning for your feet during rowing.

The pulling handle of the rower consists of a short straight bar attached to a heavy-duty abrasion-resistant nylon strap. This means the unit’s drive system doesn’t require any lubrication. The pulling handle is not equipped with pulse sensors like some of the most expensive rowers, and the included console does not have a pulse reading function.

Resistance system

The ECHANFIT R49 Pro features a magnetic resistance system similar to upright exercise bikes. It consists of a magnetic brake integrated into the front section of the rower and connected to the tension dial. As you turn the dial clockwise, the magnets move closer to the internal flywheel which increases the rowing difficulty. Conversely, if you turn the tension knob counterclockwise, the magnetic brake moves away from the flywheel which reduces the workload.

The resistance system is manual (mechanical). Therefore, you don’t need an adapter or an external power source to adjust the resistance. But on the other hand, the rower cannot adjust the resistance automatically and does not have any pre-set programs.

Similar to the pooboo H716 rower, the ECHANFIT R49 Pro offers 16 levels of resistance. On the lowest level, it delivers a fairly light rowing difficulty, great for recovery training, or a workout warmup. Conversely, the 16th level of resistance delivers considerably more resistance, great for anyone who wants to improve strength, stamina, and cardiovascular shape.

The main advantage of the magnetic resistance system is that the brake does not touch the flywheel, there is no fan or water tank that can generate noise during usage. Thus, the machine is very quiet, great for apartment use.

Last but not least, it’s important to mention that the ECHANFIT R49 does not offer a dynamic response during rowing. This pretty much stands for any full-magnetic rower (without water or air resistance elements). This means that the resistance does not depent on how fast you pull the handle; it only depends on the selected tension level. This is not necessarily a downside, but the rowing sensation is not as close to the rowing of a real boat as is for a water resistance rower or air resistance rower.

Fitness monitor

The ECHANFIT R49 Pro magnetic rower is equipped with a basic fitness monitor. It features an LCD display without backlight. It tracks time, count, total count, count per minute, and calories burned. The display is divided into two sub-section. The top section shows the strokes for the current workout. The bottom section shows all the other metrics.

The unit does not have pre-set programs or online connectivity. It is very easy to use. It only has one button. By pressing the button repeatedly, you can change the workout metric displayed on the bottom section of the screen. This way, you can also select the Scan Mode; in Scan Mode, the metrics on the bottom rotate automatically, each one appearing on the display for a few seconds. The button also covers the reset function of the unit. You can press and hold it for a few seconds to clear all the values to zero except the Total Count function.

The unit does not have a pulse reading function. It also does not show distance or split time/500. It is battery-powered and the batteries are included. You can start it up by pressing the button, but it should also start up automatically when it detects activity on the rower. It also turns off automatically after a few minutes of inactivity on the machine.

Assembly and Maintenance

The front part of the rower with all the drive and resistance elements comes pre-assembled. You only need to attach the front base stabilizer, insert the seat on the rail, add the rear stabilizer, the footrests, and the fitness monitor. This shouldn’t take more than 30-40 minutes. The manual provides clear assembly instructions and all the necessary tools are included.

For maintenance, it is important to keep the rower clean, especially the rail to prevent any damage to the seat wheels. The internal parts do not require lubrication or any maintenance. It is also recommended to periodically check for loose bolts and parts.
