Frame construction
Although the ActionLine A87604 recumbent bike features a very sturdy frame construction, most of the parts in its frame being made of steel, its specified weight capacity is only 250 lbs. The bike’s construction does include plastic parts as well, but these are only for cosmetic purposes. Among them, we can count the covers of the base of the seat, the guards of the motor and flywheel and the base caps.
The bike’s base tubes are triangular, and due to this fact, this exercise bike offers a bit more stability than other models. Its rear base also has adjustable stabilizers, while the front base integrates transport wheels.
Another one of the factors reflected into the bike’s overall stability is its width. The bike’s footprint is 64″L x 27″W (162 x 68 cm), while other recumbent bikes, such as the Universal R20 for example, only have a width of 19″. This being said, you can be sure that the bike won’t rock even if you engage in a more demanding workout.
This ActionLine exercise bike is not extremely heavy. It weighs approx. 80 lbs, which means it’s not difficult to assemble and transport once it is assembled. But nonetheless, it weights quite a bit more than the average road recumbent bike, this weight being another factor important for its overall stability.
One last aspect to mention here is frame finish. All the base tubes are coated with a corrosion resistant paint. The only color available for this bike is dark gray.
Seat and handlebars
The ActionLine A87604 recumbent exercise bike features quite a comfortable seat, approx. 18″ (45 cm), with a contoured surface. The backrest is also contoured and firm, providing an excellent lumbar support. Both the seat and the backrest integrate a generous layer of cushioning, while their upholstery is made of a durable vinyl material, with waterproof properties.
The backrest cannot be adjusted independently from the seat. Does not recline, nor does it adjust vertically. However, the whole seat assembly is adjustable. It’s attached to an oblique rail with multiple adjustment positions so you can lock it closer or farther in relation to the pedals. The bike can accommodate users between 5’0″ and 6’5″ (153 – 195 cm). Also, as we’ve mentioned above, the seat can hold riders up to 250 lbs (113.3 kg).
This exercise bike is equipped with two sets of handlebars, one attached to the seat assembly, and one on the console mast. Both handlebars feature a layer of rubber foam material in order to provide a secure grip. The front handlebars integrate a set of EKG pulse sensors; therefore, by holding onto them, the console can monitor your heart rate. Unfortunately, the seat handlebars do not have any sensors.
Drive and resistance
This ActionLine exercise bike features a belt drive system, integrating a heavy-duty belt resistant to stretching, designed for maximum performance. There are two main advantages to a belt drive on an exercise bike. One, it doesn’t require lubrication, and two, it generates almost no noise whatsoever. Therefore, this exercise bike is an excellent choice for apartment use.
The bike’s drive system integrates a balanced flywheel, which generates a steady feel during pedaling. The flywheel’s weight is not specified, but it’s not an extremely heavy one. Therefore, the momentum generated during pedaling isn’t extremely consistent as for a spin bike. This being said, the bike is perfect for recovery training.
The crankset is a three-piece part, with steel crank arms. However, since this is not a spin bike, it’s not designed to support standing up pedaling routines. Although the crankset is sturdy enough to support a lighter user in a standing up pedaling routine, this type of workouts are not recommended, and the position is awkward, just as for any other recumbent bike.
The pedals supplied with this bike are made of heavy duty PVC material. They’re weighted, they feature adjustable straps, and they also have standard threads. This means that replacements for them are available in just about any bike shop.
The ActionLine A87604 recumbent exercise bike is equipped with a motorized magnetic resistance system. The main elements of the resistance system are a small servo motor and a magnetic element which moves closer or farther in relation to the flywheel generating more or less resistance. Needless to say, resistance can only be adjusted from the bike’s console, and in order to benefit from any resistance, the bike needs to be connected to a power circuit.
This recumbent bike offers 16 levels of resistance, designed for users of all levels. The first resistance settings promote light workouts, great for elderly users, or persons who must undergo a recovery training regimen. Conversely, the top, 14-16 resistance settings will definitely help you break a sweat.
Control unit
Although the console of the ActionLine A87604 offers quite a few workout programs, it totally lacks any amenities. Compared to the console of the Schwinn 230, it lacks the sound system, the cooling fan, and the tablet shelf. It is equipped with an LCD display which indicates time, speed, distance, pulse, calories, RPM, and temperature.
In terms of programs, the console features 12 preset workouts, 5 heart rate programs, 1 body fat program, 4 user programs, and the manual mode. The user-defined programs give you the possibility to create your own custom program. Evidently, when using a pre-defined workout program, the bike will auto-adjust the resistance. However, there’s also the manual mode which gives you the possibility to change resistance as you pedal according to your preference.
The bike’s console is really easy to use. It will automatically turn on when it detects movement on the pedals, or when you press one of the buttons. It features 6 buttons. One covers the Pulse Recovery function, one is for the Body Fat function, the Up/Down keys serve for navigation and assigning values to a custom program, while the Enter key covers the confirmation function. Finally, the Start/Stop button serves the purpose of initiating a workout or pausing it in case you want to take a break or if you want to alternate cycling sessions with other types of workouts.
Assembly and Maintenance
The bike’s drive system and resistance system elements are already assembled and attached to the front part of the frame. Therefore when it comes to assembly, all you need to do is connect the two main frame parts together, attach the two base tubes, connect the seat, the backrest, the console mast, the front handlebars, the console and the pedals. This may take up to 1-1.5 hours. The included manual does provide pretty clear assembly instructions.
Since this exercise bike has a magnetic resistance system and a belt drive, its internal parts do not require any lubrication. Therefore, when it comes to maintenance you only have to periodically check for loose bolts and parts.
