The SUNMYTH indoor cycle is one of the exercise bikes released in 2022. It has a slightly different design than most other bikes designed for spinning. However, in terms of flywheel weight and resistance system, it is similar to the Lanos bike.

Frame construction

As we’ve already mentioned above, the SUNMYTH indoor cycle features a different construction than your average conventional spin bike. First of all, it has a triangular structure that lacks the longitudinal bar that connects the two front and back base points. However, the frame is pretty sturdy, rated for a maximum user weight limit of 275 lbs (125 kg).

The bike is made mostly of oval steel tubes. It has smoother and more aesthetic design lines than the average spin bike. The base bars are angled in order to provide more stability, and both of them have adjustable levelers with rubber pads. All the steel parts in the bike’s construction are double-coated with a durable paint finish. The color of the finish is black with the “SUNMYTH” logo painted white, these being the only colors available for this bike.

Like most other indoor cycling bikes, the SUNMYTH bike is not a large fitness machine. Its assembled footprint is approx. 44.88″L x 21.2″W (114 x 54 cm). However, you should leave some clearance all around it for safe usage and easy access. The approximate recommended usage area for an exercise bike of this size should be around 80″L x 60″W (203 x 152 cm).

The bike is fairly heavy. It weighs around 95 lbs (43 kg). Therefore, the transport of the packaged unit may require two people or at least a box cart. But once the bike is assembled, it can easily be moved by only one person. That’s because its front base is equipped with large silicone wheels.

Seat and handlebars

The SUNMYTH indoor cycling trainer includes a saddle designed for superior comfort. Its top section is cushioned and covered by a layer of durable vinyl material. It also has a median cutout for improved breathability. It’s also important to mention that its attachment system features a standard collar and one screw, which makes the saddle easy to remove if needed. Also, if you’ll ever want to replace it, compatible options are widely available.

The seat is four-way adjustable (up, down, front, back). Its upright post features 20 adjustment positions while the horizontal slider adds a few inches of front-to-back adjustment. Thus, the bike should be able to accommodate with no problem, users between 5’0″ and 6’3″ (153 – 190 cm).

The bike is equipped with a multi-grip handlebar. It offers the possibility to adopt a climbing grip, an off-road grip, a standard grip, and a close grip. It is fully covered by a layer of rubber foam material for a superior grip. It does not have pulse sensors or other controls for the bike.

The bike’s handlebar is only two-way adjustable (up, down). It does not have a horizontal slider for front-to-back adjustment. Its upright post has 10 adjustment positions and its highest point above the floor level (excluding the device holder), is approx. 42″ (107 cm).

Resistance system

The SUNMYTH indoor cycling bike is equipped with a standard friction resistance system. It is not motorized, so you don’t need to connect it to a power source. The only power source required for it is a set of two AAA batteries for the fitness monitor. It’s also important to mention here that the monitor does not control the pedaling difficulty in any way.

The bike’s resistance system consists of a wool felt pad attached to the frame above the flywheel, and connected to the tension knob above the main frame tube. When you turn the knob clockwise, the brake pad tightens on the flywheel which increases the pedaling difficulty.

The bike’s resistance system does not have pre-determined tension levels. You simply tighten the brake on the flywheel until you find a pedaling difficulty you are comfortable with. As a general idea, if the pad is tightened all the way, the bike simulates a hill climb and can provide quite a challenge even for a regular user. Also, the tension knob can be pressed all the way down to stop the flywheel instantly. This emergency brake feature is quite useful especially if you’ve been pedaling at a high speed, because trying to stop the flywheel with your feet from the pedals may lead to injuries.

It’s important to mention here that the brake pad may require lubrication in order to allow the flywheel to spin smoothly. It will also wear out after a while and you’ll have to replace it.

Drive system

The SUNMYTH bike is equipped with a heavy-duty crankset. It has durable steel arms with a flat structure similar to road bikes. The pulley is made from a tough thermoplastic material. The pedals have toe cages but do not have SPD elements for spin shoes. They’re made of aluminum alloy and painted black. Their threads are 9/16″ so you can easily find compatible replacements for them, in case you want to change them.

The exact Q-Factor (spacing between the pedals) of the bike is not specified. It is shorter than 200 mm, though, promoting a natural and comfortable foot placement on the pedals. Thus, the pedaling motion does not generate any extra lateral stress on your joints.

The bike is equipped with a belt drive system. It uses a poly-v belt highly resistant to stretching and abrasion, and designed for superior traction. The belt guard is transparent so you can actually see the belt and the pulley. Since the bike uses a belt drive, you don’t have to worry about transmission lubrication.

Similar to the MKHS 003 indoor cycle, the SUNMYTH bike integrates a 35-lb (15.8 kg) flywheel. It is chrome-plated and has ABS side guards. It is perimeter-weighted for improved inertia which is great for spinning.

The flywheel can move both ways, not just forward. In other words, you can pedal in reverse on this bike if you want to diversify your workouts. It’s important to mention, though, that coasting is not possible and when pedaling in reverse, the bike provides the same resistance as when pedaling forward.

Fitness monitor and other accessories

The SUNMYTH bike includes a pretty basic fitness monitor. It does not have pre-set workout programs or online connectivity. It is not compatible with any fitness app and does not offer the possibility to set goals for your workouts.

The monitor unit is divided into four sub-sections. In up-down order, it indicates time, calories, speed, and distance. Speed and distance are shown in English units and you cannot change them to metric units. The calorie reading is not exactly the best as it’s based only on RPM, so it doesn’t consider the applied resistance on the flywheel. Evidently, if you tighten the brake harder on the flywheel, you will burn more calories.

As we’ve already mentioned, the monitor unit requires two AAA batteries. These are not included. It doesn’t have buttons, so it basically starts up when it detects flywheel movement. It also automatically turns off if it doesn’t detect any activity on the bike for more than a few minutes.

In terms of other accessories included with this bike, we can mention the tablet holder. It is pretty large and should be able to accommodate most tablets. It attaches to the top tube of the handlebar and does not have any angle adjustability.

Assembly and Maintenance

The bike’s main body comes pre-assembled. The flywheel, the crankset, the belt with its guard, and the brake, are also pre-installed. You only need to attach the two base bars, the pedals, the seat post, the seat, the handlebar post, the handlebar, and the fitness monitor. This shouldn’t take more than one hour. The task is fairly simple and the manual provides clear assembly instructions. A basic toolkit is also included.

For maintenance, you only have to keep the bike clean and periodically check for loose bolts and parts. The drive belt doesn’t require lubrication, but the brake pad might need a few drops of silicone lubricant from time to time for a smooth flywheel motion.
