Frame construction
The Zhüken S703 indoor cycling trainer features a heavy-duty frame made of oval steel tubing for improved aesthetics. The bike’s frame is standard triangular, with the seat tube welded to the median base bar for extra sturdiness. All the steel tubes in the bike’s construction are coated with a corrosion-resistant and chip-resistant paint finish. The color used is black, this being the only color available for this bike. The only exception is the flywheel which is chrome-plated.
An important part of the frame is concealed by the large drivetrain cover. The brake system has a pretty large cover as well and the flywheel features ABS side panels too.
Similar to other spin bikes, the Zhüken S703 trainer does not take too much space. Its footprint is only approx. 41″L x 21″W (104 x 54 cm). However, with the seat extended all the way to the back, its overall length gains a few extra inches. That’s why it is recommended to leave at least two feet of clearance all around it.
The fully assembled bike is not extremely heavy compared to other models. However, it still weighs over 70 lbs. Therefore, the transport of the packaged unit should be done by two people. Its assembly, however, can be done by only one person.
Due to its weight, base construction, and low center of gravity, the bike provides excellent stability. It shouldn’t rock or move even if you engage in a more intense spinning workout. Plus, both it base stabilizers are equipped with adjustable levelers, while its front stabilizer also has transport wheels.
The bike’s frame also integrates a step-up bar. This is the small tube that connects the seat tube to the main oblique tube of the frame. However, this bar is also covered by the drivetrain guard. So, by stepping on it, it may crack. Therefore, spinning workouts that require stepping on the frame are not recommended.
Seat and handlebars
The Zhüken S703 indoor cycling bike comes with a high-comfort saddle. It is approx. 8.2″ (21 cm) wide and 10.6″ (27 cm) long, so it provides plenty of contact surface. It integrates a thick layer of foam cushioning and has a durable, faux leather cover. It is also contoured and has a median cutout for improved breathability.
The bike’s seat is four-way adjustable (front, back, up, down). Its upright post has several adjustment positions while the horizontal slider also offers several inches of front to back adjustment. Therefore, the bike should accommodate with no problem, users between 5’0″ and 6’2″ (153 – 188 cm). Also, this indoor cycling bike is rated for a maximum user weight capacity of 330 lbs (150 kg) which evidently applies to the seat as well.
The Zhüken indoor cycle includes a multi-grip handlebar. It offers the possibility to adopt a parallel grip, a racing grip, a climbing grip, and a close grip. It does not have drop-down grips, or aero grips, but also has a small loop grip in the middle to which you can attach the tablet holder and the performance monitor.
Unlike the seat, the bike’s handlebar assembly is only two-way adjustable (up, down). It does not have a horizontal slider. It is covered by a layer of high-density foam for improved comfort. Also, its side grips integrate metallic pulse sensors and the included performance monitor has a pulse reading function.
Resistance and drive
The Zhüken S703 exercise bike is equipped with a standard friction resistance system. It consists of a felt-pad brake pad attached to the main frame tube and to the tension knob on top of it. As you turn the knob clockwise, the pad applies more friction to the flywheel which results in a greater pedaling difficulty.
The bike’s tension dial does not have pre-determined levels on it like it is the case for most exercise bikes with a magnetic resistance system. You simply tighten the brake until you get the pedaling difficulty that you want. As a general idea, the brake can be tightened up to the point you can barely pedal, and this way you can get a strength workout. The tension knob also has an emergency brake function; you can press it down to stop the flywheel from spinning.
Needless to say, since the bike’s resistance system requires manual action, the bike cannot adjust the resistance automatically. This also means you don’t need an external power source for it or an adapter, and that the performance monitor does not have pre-set workout programs.
Like most other spin bikes, the Zhüken S703 trainer is equipped with a perimeter-weighted flywheel for improved inertia. It weighs approx. 35 lbs (15.8 kg) and provides quite a consistent workout. It also allows pedaling in reverse, but as it is the case for most exercise bikes, coasting on it is not possible. When you pedal in reverse, you get the same resistance as when you pedal forward.
The bike’s drive system uses a belt for its transmission. A belt drive comes with several advantages. For example, it generates less vibration than a chain, it doesn’t catch rust and does not require lubrication. It also contributes to the overall quietness and smoothness of the ride.
As we’ve mentioned above, the bike is rated for a maximum user weight capacity of 330 lbs (150 kg). This also stands for its pedals and crankset. The bike is equipped with a set of steel-made and chrome-plated crank arms, and aluminum alloy pedals. There are no SPD elements for spin shoes on the pedals, but they have standard 9/16 threads, so compatible replacements are widely available. They do have toe cages with adjustable straps, though, in case you need to secure your feet on them.
Performance monitor
Although the performance monitor unit included with the Zhüken S703 bike does not have online connectivity or pre-set programs, it still offers several more features than a basic model. First of all, its display is divided into 6 sub-sections in order to show up to 6 workout metrics simultaneously. It tracks time, speed, distance, calories, and pulse. However, it is not telemetric. This means it cannot track your pulse from an HR transmitter, smartwatch, or HR armband; it can only track your pulse if you keep your hands on the contact sensors integrated into the side grips of the handlebar.
The monitor unit is fairly easy to use. It has three buttons – Mode, Set, and Reset. The Mode button covers the selection function for some of the metrics. The Set button gives you the possibility to set up workout goals for time, distance, and calories. If a goal is selected, the unit will count down from the selected value until it reaches zero. And finally, the Reset button allows you to clear all the values on the monitor to zero.
The unit is battery-powered. It starts up when you begin pedaling. It also turns off automatically if it doesn’t detect any activity on the bike for more than four minutes.
Assembly and Maintenance
The main body of the bike comes pre-assembled, with all the drive elements and guards already in place. All you need to for assembly is attach the two base stabilizers, the pedals, the seat, the handlebars, the performance monitor unit, and the device holder. This shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes. The included manual provides pretty clear assembly instructions and the box also includes a basic toolkit for the task.
Once the bike is assembled, maintenance doesn’t require much. All you have to do is keep the frame clean, wipe the sweat from the frame at the end of the workout, and periodically check for loose bolts and parts. The brake pad will eventually wear out and will require replacement. Also, in case it squeaks when in contact with the moving flywheel, a bit of silicone lubricant should solve the problem.
