Frame construction
The Total Gym 1900 features a heavy-duty steel frame which can support users up to 350 lbs (159 kg). Its frame is foldable, and actually comes ready-assembled and folded, so you only have to add the handles and other accessories. The two main side rails consist of two main pieces each, the lower rail part and the top rail part. The two pieces of each rail connect and lock at the middle, offering plenty of travel for the moving board. The bottom part of the unit’s rails is equipped with stoppers for the gliding board.
With the frame fully extended, the unit is fairly large, especially lengthwise. It is approx. 92.5″ (235 cm) long, and 16″ (40.6 cm) wide. This being said, it can accommodate users up to 6’5″ (196 cm) with no problem, promoting complete arm and leg extensions for all exercises. Also, in case you’re wondering, the folded length of the unit is approx. 50.5″ (128 cm).
The tallest part of the machine is given by the height adjustment bar; its top reaches approx. 43.25″ (110 cm) above floor level. On top of all these dimensions, it is recommended to leave at least two feet of clearance all around the machine for safe operation and access.
Although it’s a heavy-duty home gym set, the Total Gym 1900 is not extremely heavy. It weighs approx. 55 lbs (25 kg) and shouldn’t be extremely difficult to set up or transport by one person.
The unit’s gliding board is quite a durable piece. It features a metallic frame and integrates a thick layer of foam cushioning. It’s actually divided into two sections, the top part providing a bit of extra cushioning and molding to provide more comfort for the user’s head. Therefore, it provides optimal comfort for all the exercises. It’s approx. 45″ (114 cm) long, 13″ (33 cm) wide in the middle, and approx. 15″ (38 cm) wide at the top, providing plenty of contact space for a comfortable positioning.
The upholstery on the unit’s board is made of a strong vinyl material which is also moisture proof, which makes it very easy to maintain. The bottom part of the board is equipped with four industrial-grade wheels which enable it to glide smoothly on the rails.
The unit’s base bars are standard cylindrical tubes. They’re equipped with protective ABS caps.
All the metallic parts of the machine’s frame are coated with a corrosion-resistant and chip-resistant paint finish, and for some versions, the top rails feature a chrome finish.
Accessories and other parts
In terms of accessories, the Total Gym 1900 includes a leg pulley kit, multi-function handles, ab crunch boards, press up bars, dip bars, pilates bar, and the flip exercise chart.
The leg pulley accessory kit features one cable, one foot harness, one pulley and a small attachment bracket. You can attach the bracket with a hitch pin to the adjustment bar of the unit, placing the pulley on your desired height in order to perform various leg exercises.
The ab crunch handles are equipped with two padded elbow rests. They attach to the top sections of the side rails offering the possibility to perform several types of ab crunches. The multi-function handles attach in the same position as the ab crunch handles, but they feature four grips and also allow you to secure your feet up for sit-ups.
The press up bars attach to the lower part of the side rails, while the dip bars require being placed at the midsection of the rails. And finally, the pilates bar attaches directly to the front base stabilizer. All the handles feature rubberized grips for optimal comfort and enhanced hand adherence.
Of course, the Total Gym 1900 includes a set of nylon pulleys which integrate stainless steel ball bearings for smooth operation. The pulleys attach to the height adjustment bracket. They have a swivel design, promoting the unhindered execution of all exercises. They use durable steel cables and standard D-handles with rubberized grips.
Last but not least, this Total Gym exerciser includes a flip chart which covers most of the exercises that can be performed on it. Also, a set of two DVDs is included, which show how to execute the most important exercises correctly, in order to obtain the best results.
Resistance System
The Total Gym 1900 is a fitness machine that involves lifting a portion of your own bodyweight. Its adjustment bar offers 12 positions of incline for the gliding rails and the moving board. Therefore, it provides a weight resistance range between 3% and 45% of your total bodyweight.
In case you’re wondering, this Total Gym unit does not include pegs that can be loaded with dumbbell plates to add weight to the gliding board, such as the Bayou Fitness Total Trainer. Also, the pulleys don’t add extra resistance.
So, as a small conclusion here, the Total Gym 1900 is not a machine designed for extreme strength training, or for building massive muscles. However, it offers the possibility of performing a wide array of cardio exercises, muscle strength exercises, toning exercises, or pilates.

The manual provides very clear assembly instructions and the tools required for it are included. However, most of the parts are easily attached and adjusted via pop-pins.
For maintenance, the unit’s pulleys may require lubrication from time to time. It’s also recommended to keep the unit’s rails clean and periodically re-tighten the bolts if it’s the case.
