Frame construction

The Sunny SF-B1918 is similar up to a point to the Body Xtreme BXF024 bike. It features a triangular frame made of steel tubing. All the tubes in the bike’s construction are oval for improved sturdiness and aesthetics. Also, the rear stabilizer is slightly larger than the front one and curved for improved stability.

All the frame tubes are double-coated with a corrosion-resistant paint finish. The color used is light gray, this being the only color available for this bike, at least for the moment. The only exceptions are the seat post which is painted black, and the flywheel which has a chrome finish.

This Sunny Health & Fitness exercise bike is a light-capacity model, rated for a maximum user weight limit of 220 lbs (100 kg) only. The bike itself is also pretty light; with all the parts assembled, it only weighs approx. 63 lbs (28.7 kg) so it can be carried and assembled by only one person.

The bike is not too large. With all the parts assembled, it is only 42.5″ (108 cm) long, and 24″ (61 cm) wide. This being said, it can fit pretty well in a small room or apartment. It still is recommended, though, to allow a clearance of at least two feet all around it for ease of access and safe usage.

Although the bike is fairly light, it has a low center of gravity so it offers excellent stability. Plus, both base stabilizers feature adjustable levelers. The front stabilizer also integrates a set of small wheels for easy relocation.

Seat and handlebars

The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B1918 exercise bike is equipped with a pretty standard saddle. Its top integrates a durable nylon shell with a urethane cover. It is not super hard but also does not integrate a very thick cushioning layer. It is fairly large, though, 11″ (28 cm) long, and 10″ (25 cm) wide, so it provides plenty of contact surface.

The saddle attaches to a triangular plate via three screws. It is four-way adjustable (up, down, front, back). Its upright post offers several adjustment positions while its horizontal slider adds a few extra inches of front-to-back adjustment. The applicable inseam range for this bike is 26.5″ – 33″ (67 – 84 cm). Thus, the bike should be able to accommodate users between 4’10” and 6’0″ (147 – 183 cm). Taller persons should still be able to use this bike but they may not benefit from a complete range of motion.

The bike’s handlebar is non-adjustable. Its post attaches to the frame at its base via a set of screws. The handlebar itself attaches to the post via four screws. It does not have a slider like the seat, but you can loosen it up to slightly adjust its angle, then re-tighten it back. It does not have adjustment knobs like the seat.

The bike’s handlebar offers multiple grip possibilities. Thus, you can adopt a standard grip, a cruising grip, a climbing grip, and a semi-aero grip. It is fully covered by a layer of high-density foam for a comfortable and secure grip. It does not have pulse sensors, though. The bike also includes a device holder which can be attached to the handlebar assembly.

Resistance system

The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B1918 indoor cycling bike is equipped with a manual magnetic resistance system. This being said, it does not require an adapter or an external power source. However, it also does not have pre-set programs and it cannot adjust the resistance automatically.

The bike’s resistance system uses a magnetic brake pad which is attached under the top main frame tube above the flywheel. It is also connected to the tension knob, so when you turn this knob, the magnets move closer or farther from the flywheel. This adds or reduces the pedaling difficulty.

The main advantage of the magnetic resistance system is that the brake pad does not touch the flywheel. Therefore, the pedaling motion is very smooth and quiet. Also, the brake pad does not suffer any wear since there is no friction, and you don’t have to worry about its replacement.

The bike does not have pre-set resistance levels. You simply turn the knob until you get the desired resistance. As a general idea, with the magnets as close as possible to the flywheel the pedaling difficulty is fairly decent simulating a steep climb.

Drive system

The Sunny SF-B1918 indoor cycling trainer is equipped with a 22 lbs (10 kg) flywheel. Although it’s not super heavy, it is perimeter-weighted so it provides a fairly decent inertia. It is chrome-plated for a higher resistance to rust, and also has side panels made of thermoplastic material for improved aesthetics.

The flywheel is bi-directional, so you can pedal in reverse if you want. However, when pedaling in reverse, the resistance remains constant, given by the distance between the magnets and the flywheel. Also, coasting is not possible on this bike.

The bike’s drive system uses a 5PK 53″ poly-v belt resistant to stretching and abrasion. This belt drive system comes with several advantages over a chain drivetrain. First of all, you don’t need to worry about its lubrication. Second of all, it generates slightly less vibration than a chain. And third of all, you won’t have to deal with problems such as stiffened chain links.

The Sunny SF-B1918 bike is equipped with a pretty sturdy crankset featuring oval arms similar to road bikes. The pedals are also pretty durable, made of metallic alloy. They do not have SPD clips for spin shoes but do have toe cages. Their threads are standard 9/16, so in case you’ll ever want to replace them, compatible options should be available in any bike shop.

Fitness monitor

The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B1918 indoor cycling bike is equipped with a basic fitness monitor. It features an LCD display that tracks time, distance, total distance, speed, RPM, and calories burned. As we’ve mentioned above, the bike does not have pulse sensors, and the monitor does not have a pulse reading function. Speed and distance are shown in English units only (MPH and miles). There is no option for setting them to metric units.

The unit is easy to use. It only has one button. By pressing the button, you can scroll through the workout metrics and select the one that you want to view. A Scan Mode is also available. In Scan Mode, the unit rotates all the metrics showing each one for approx. 6 seconds. The button also covers the unit’s reset function. You can press and hold it for a few seconds to clear all the values on it to zero.

The fitness monitor unit is battery-powered. It requires two AAA batteries which are included. It starts up when you begin pedaling or when you push the button. It also automatically turns off if it does not detect any activity on the bike for more than 4 minutes.

Assembly and Maintenance

The main body of the bike with the flywheel, belt drive, belt cover, brake, and crank, comes pre-assembled. You only have to attach the two base stabilizers, the pedals, the seat post, the saddle, the handlebar post, the handlebar, the device holder, and the fitness monitor. This shouldn’t take more than 30-40 minutes. The task is pretty straightforward and the manual provides clear assembly instructions. Also, all the necessary tools are included.

Once the bike is assembled, you only need to remove the perspiration that may fall on the frame at the end of the workout, and in general, keep the bike clean. The bike’s drive system does not require lubrication.
