Console unit
As opposed to the console unit of the C 990, the NordicTrack C 1650 features a wider console display, 10″ in diagonal. Nonetheless, the display has touch-screen technology, which makes navigation and usage of the integrated apps, and the iFit ones extremely easy.
The console is iFit enabled, meaning that it already integrates an iFit module, so as long as you have a WiFi connection and an iFit membership (which is not included), you can directly access your iFit account and the iFit apps base, in order to compete with other users, keep track of your progress, or use GoogleMaps tracks. The console, however, has two Google tracks built-in by default, Monterrey, and South Africa, to serve as demo applications.
Although an iFit subscription is recommended if you want to benefit from a wide array of workout apps, it’s not necessary to use the treadmill. The console has its own database of workouts, 34 in number, which is more than enough for almost any runner. These workouts have various focuses, some of them being fat-loss focused, others offering an interval training setting etc. It offers the possibility to setup target goals for time, distance and calories. Also, it has the manual mode, which allows you to directly adjust speed and incline as you run. Evidently, if you will be using a track from GoogleMaps or one of the onboard programs, the machine will adjust incline and tread belt speed automatically.
The console displays all the important workout statistics, including time, distance, calories burned, pace, intensity, heart rate and the number of vertical feet you have climbed. The current speed and incline settings are also displayed. You can select the speed to be calculated in MPH or km/h, and distance to be calculated in miles or km.
The console unit also integrates several amenities, including accessory trays, tablet holder, sound system, and workout fan. The sound system consists of two acoustic chambered speakers, situated on the sides of the console. It’s compatible with most MP3 players, smartphones or tablets. The quality of sound it renders is quite impressive, far superior to the speakers of any tablet or laptop. The workout fan is considerably larger than the fans equipped on various other treadmills in this price range. It’s also automatic, matching its speed to the intensity of your workout. Its speed can also be manually adjusted from the keys on the console.
The console dashboard features two molded side trays for various accessories. A tablet holder is also supplied with the treadmill, accessory that attaches to the top side of the console, so the tablet won’t block the view of the console monitor.
Motor
The motor equipped on this treadmill is a 3.5 CHP model, made to withstand prolonged workouts, continuing to provide a smooth motion of the belt without overheating or any other issues, even if the user is close to the maximum supported capacity, and even if the maximum speed setting is used constantly. It integrates a small flywheel for extra stability and smoothness. The machine can deliver speeds up to 12 MPH. Speed can be adjusted in increments of 0.1 and 0.5 MPH, which is quite a plus, as you can easily find the most appropriate pace for your jog or run.
As the console features numerous onboard workouts, and you also have the iFit alternatives, the motor can adjust speed automatically, if you choose to exercise with one of the pre-set or custom made workouts.
Since it’s a motorized treadmill, it requires being connected to a power circuit of 120-v, 15 amp. It comes with a power plug, not an adapter, and a 4 ft. long cable, which plugs into the machine close to its front base.
Frame and deck construction
As we’ve mentioned above. This NordicTrack treadmill features an overall construction similar to a light commercial model, even though the machine itself is not labeled as a light commercial one. Its frame is made of steel, featuring a heavy construction, with a net weight of 222 lbs (100.6 kg). However, its metallic base integrates transport wheels, so its relocation shouldn’t be a problem. By leaning it onto its wheels, you won’t be handling more than 40-50 lbs of its total weight. Conversely, the heavy weight of the machine considerably adds to its stability and overall sturdiness.
This treadmill is not a small one. In fact, it takes approx. 78″L x 36″W (199 x 91 cm) of floor space. Also, for safe operation, it’s recommended to assign a clearance of at least two feet on each side of the deck, and at least 3 feet at the rear. However, the despite its large footprint, it has a folding design, using a hydraulic telescopic element which assists with the lifting and lowering the deck.
The machine’s deck treadmill is built to support users up to 325 lbs (147 kg). It integrates the FlexSelect cushioning system, which consists of 3 suspension cells on each side of the deck. The firmness of each cell can be adjusted. You can rotate them in order to increase or decrease the overall firmness of the deck. The deck’s cushioning system can reduce up to 25% of the running impact on your joints.
The deck provides a running surface of 60″L x 20″W (152 x 51 cm). This means it can accommodate comfortably users up to 6’5″ (195 cm), for running workouts. It’s equipped with a commercial standard, heavy-duty belt, which can withstand any type of treadmill workout. Also, the deck’s integrates precision-machined rollers, with sealed ball bearings for a long lifespan, and for a smooth and steady movement of the tread belt.
Finally, all metallic frame parts are coated with corrosion resistant paint, black for the base and silver for the upright posts. Most of the PVC parts in the machine’s construction are also black and silver.
Incline and step-up height
The NordickTrack C 1650 features a motorized incline system, consisting of a small lift, situated at the front of the deck. The incline can only be adjusted from the console of the machine. The total incline that can be achieved is 12%, the console featuring 12 keys for quick adjustment. However, incline can also be adjusted gradually.
The deck has a step up height of 8 1/2″ (21.5 cm) when it is set up at 0% incline. With incline setup at maximum, the front part will raise by a few inches, but basically, you’ll be situated on the deck at the middle, not all the way at the front. Differently put, the maximum elevation that you will get by running at maximum incline should be approx. 13″ (33 cm). So, in conclusion here, the ceiling height in the room where the treadmill will be in use should be higher than your own height, plus about 17-18″ (43-46 cm), in order to avoid any issues.
Assembly and Maintenance
The deck comes already assembled and attached to the front metallic frame. All you need to add are the front transport wheels, the console posts, the side handlebars, the accessory tray, the console, and the hydraulic lift element. The whole operation shouldn’t take more than one hour. However, since the machine is heavy, two persons are required.
A detailed user’s manual is supplied with the treadmill, offering step-by-step guidance for the assembly. Allen wrenches required for some screws and adjusting the belt, are supplied, but you will also need your own adjustable wrench and Phillips screwdriver.
The machine comes with a lifetime warranty for the motor and frame, 5 years on parts and 2 years for labor. But in order for this warranty to become valid, you will have to register your product on the company website when you receive it.
For maintenance, the periodical cleaning of the tread belt is recommended, to prevent any dirt or textile fibers to be dragged and caught in the motor. In terms of lubrication, the belt comes pre-lubricated from the factory with industrial lubricants and should require any further lubrication for a long period of usage.
