The Marcy SM-4033 is currently the most complete strength training system from MarcyPro. In terms of features, it can be compared with the Marcy SM-4008, but it is considerably larger and has adjustable cross-over pulleys, as well as several more accessories and attachments. Although it is not advertised or sold as a cage for commercial use, it’s definitely pretty close to the sturdiness and construction of one.

Cage construction
The Marcy SM-4033 Smith Cage features a heavy-duty construction with a frame made of 14-gauge steel tubing. Most of the frame is coated with a durable, corrosion-resistant, and chip-resistant paint finish. However, the guide rods of the Smith element and the lat machine are chrome-plated. This also stands for the adjustable posts of the cross-over adjustable pulleys.
The fully assembled cage is fairly large. It is approx. 70″ (178 cm) deep, and 67.8″ (172 cm) wide at the base. However, the total width of the unit considering the barbell, is 84″ (213 cm). The highest point of the cage is given by the pull-up bar assembly which reaches approx. 86″ (219 cm) above floor level. These being said, the cage won’t fit in a room with a 7-foot ceiling. Plus, you will have to allow at least 1′ of clearance above for the correct execution of all pull-up exercises. Also, Marcy recommends leaving at least 2′ of clearance on each side and at the rear of the cage, and at least 3′ – 4′ of clearance at the front.
Needless to say, the whole Marcy SM-4033 home gym is pretty heavy. Its total weight is close to 600 lbs (272 kg). All this weight, plus the extra weight provided by the loaded plates delivers superior stability. The unit shouldn’t budge even if you are using weight loads close to the maximum limit. The base bars do have anchor points so you can secure it to the floor, if needed.
The front upright pillars of the cage feature 17 adjustment holes for the j-hooks and dip bars. They are 1-inch in diameter, so other standard attachments should be compatible with this Marcy home gym.
Workout stations
The Marcy Smith Machine SM-4033 makes available 5 main workout stations. These are:
Smith cage. Needless to say, this is the main workout element of the Marcy SM-4033. A 7-foot Olympic bar is included with it. It offers the possibility to perform secured squats or deadlifts, with a little bit of extra control as opposed to free barbell exercises. The front pillars of the cage also have attachment holes for j-hooks in case you want to perform free squats. However, safety bars are not included. Only the Smith element has safety hooks.
Pull-up station. This attachment consists of a multi-grip bar. It offers the possibility to perform all kinds of pull-ups or chin-ups and is durable enough to support weighted exercises. Its grips do not have foam sleeves. However, they are knurled for improved contact.
Cross-over station. This workout station consists of two mobile pulley attachments. Their upright posts feature 15 adjustment positions. They offer an inner swivel of 90° and their carriages have handles for easy adjustment. They offer the possibility to execute all kinds of cable cross-over exercises, as well as lat pull-downs, standing rows, shoulder presses, and more.
Butterfly press. This attachment is quite a plus. It consists of two arms with large pads, as well as a backbone with an extra backrest pad. It attaches to the lat machine and offers the possibility to perform butterfly exercises. However, it does not work as a front press, as is the case for the butterfly elements of other home gyms, such as the Marcy MWM-988.
Low pulley station. The unit’s low pulley is attached at the base of the lat attachment. It offers the possibility to perform seated rows, standing rows, and other low pulley exercises. The machine also includes a footrest plate for extra support during seated rows. It is important to mention, though, that the low pulley cannot be attached to the included bench in order to perform leg extensions or leg curls. You can perform standing (one leg) curls via the cross-over station with the provided ankle cuff.
Other parts and accessories
First of all, the Marcy SM-4033 Smith Machine is equipped with 31 pulleys. These are made of heavy-duty nylon material, highly resistant to abrasion, and integrate sealed bearings for a smooth motion. The included cables are steel ropes with PVC sleeves on them to prevent the scratching of the pulleys. Although most of the machine’s stations are rated for only 300 lbs (136 kg) of weight loads, the cables are rated for 2,000 lbs (907 kg) strength.
As we’ve mentioned above, this home gym doesn’t come with safety bars for free squats. However, a set of j-hooks are included with it. They are rubberized to prevent noise and paint damage. And rated for 300 lbs (136 kg).
A set of two dip arms are also included with the Marcy SM-4033. These attach to the front upright pillars of the cage. They have pretty long grips with rubber sleeves at the front for improved contact.
Six weight storage posts are included with this Marcy strength cage. They attach to the rear upright post of the unit. They’re meant for storing 2″ Olympic plates; they do not have removable sleeves and cannot accommodate 1″ standard plates. Collar springs for securing the plates are included for all storage posts.
Last but not least, the Marcy SM-4033 includes a landmine attachment, a lat bar, a tricep rope, 2 D-handles with multiple attachment rings, a short bar, and an ankle strap.
Bench
The Marcy SM-4033 home gym system includes a multi-position adjustable bench with a preacher pad attachment. The bench is built on a steel frame coated with a corrosion-resistant paint finish. It is approx. 62″ (158 cm) long, and 26″ (66 cm) wide, while its highest point reaches 55″ (140 cm) when the backrest is set to the top position.
The bench offers 6 adjustment positions for the backrest. The approximate angles are -27°, 0°, 12°, 27°, 42°, 59°, and 76°. The seat pad is also angle-adjustable. It offers three positions for 0°, 8°, and 16°.
The bench’s adjustability doesn’t end here. Its preacher pad attachment and the height of the ankle stopper are also adjustable. Each one has three height adjustment positions.
The backrest, the seat pad, and the preacher pad integrate 2.5″ of foam cushioning. Their covers are made of durable vinyl material which is sweatproof and easy to maintain. The preacher pad feature offers support for your curl bar. Its exact weight limit is not mentioned but it should hold at least 100 lbs (45 kg). The ankle stoppers also have foam rollers to provide the necessary comfort during sit-ups.
The exact weight of the bench is not specified, but it is pretty heavy. However, its rear base is equipped with a set of small wheels while the foot stopper attachment has a handle so you can easily lift the bench from its front end and roll it away if the cage empty.
Weight Capacity and Resistance
Most of the training stations available with the Marcy Smith Machine SM-4033 are rated for a maximum weight limit of 300 lbs (136 kg). This includes the Smith element, the weight carriage of the lat attachment, bar catches, dip bars, and pull-up bar attachment. The bench is rated for a maximum weight limit of 600 lbs (272 kg), which should include the user’s weight plus the barbell. The weight plate storage posts have a weight limit of 100 lbs (45 kg) each.
In terms of weight resistance, the machine’s butterfly press and the low pulley provide a 1:1 weight ratio. In other words, if you load the lat carriage with a 100 lbs (45 kg) for example, you will benefit from a weight resistance of 100 lbs (45 kg) when using the low pulley or the butterfly station.
Conversely, the cross-over pulleys have a weight resistance ratio of 2:1. Therefore, if the carriage is loaded with 100 lbs (45 kg), each cross-over pulley will provide a weight resistance of 50 lbs (22. 6 kg).

Assembly and Maintenance
Needless to say, the Marcy SM-4033 Smith Cage requires complete user assembly. It comes in 5 pretty heavy boxes and requires at least two people for transport and assembly. The assembly task is not too easy to carry out due to the multitude of parts, and will take at least 5-6 hours. But on the other hand, the manual provides very clear, step-by-step assembly instructions and schematics. Tools for the assembly are not included. You will need two adjustable wrenches and a set of Allen wrenches.
Once the home gym is completely assembled, maintenance does not require much. The guide rods of the Smith element and the lat carriage may require some greasing from time to time to provide a smooth travel for the moving parts.

I have fitness Gear Olympic style wights with 1″7/8″ hold will they fit on this equipment?
Unfortunately not. The sleeves on the bar are not removable, and they’re meant for 2″ Olympic weight plates. So, plates with 1 7/8″ holes won’t fit.
