This Core Fitness Adjustable Dumbbell Set is quite similar to the StairMaster TwistLock set that we’ve previously reviewed here. Their design is almost identical and features the same TwistLock adjustment system, weight range, and weight increments. They’re different from the Bowflex SelectTech 552 as instead of twisting any side knobs to adjust them, you simply twist the handles. There’s a lot more to be said with regards to these selectorized dumbbells, though, and in this review, we’ll try to cover each and every important aspect.

Dumbbell construction

The construction of these Core Fitness adjustable dumbbells involves both plastic and metal. To begin with, the weight plates are made of steel, but they’re coated with by core fitness 5-50 lbs adjustable dumbbellsa layer of durable, high-impact PVC material. This particular aspect comes with its pluses and minuses. In other words, plates won’t rattle on the handles, they won’t catch rust and have an aesthetic aspect. However, if you repeatedly drop them on a hard surface such as concrete, the PVC coating, even though it’s quite durable, will eventually crack. These being said, just as for any other selectorized dumbbells, it’s recommended to use them with extra care. Also, even though they can support exercises as push-ups, these are not recommended.

The handles are also made of steel but are coated with a layer of rubber, with an arched layout. Therefore, the handles supply a comfortable, sure-grip, minimizing damage to the hands. Also, the rubber material offers superior adherence, even if your hands are sweaty. Thus, the handles are easy to turn, in order to adjust the weight.

The Core Fitness adjustable dumbbells aren’t much larger than fixed, hex dumbells. With all the weight plates attached, their length is approx. 14″ (35.5 cm), while their width is approx. 7.5″ (19 cm). In other words, their total length is the same as the length of a 50 lbs hex dumbbell. The plates are a bit wider than for a 50 lbs standard hex dumbbell, but on the other hand, these dumbbells are considerably less bulky than the Power Block Elite 70.

Adjustment system and increments

The Core Fitness selectorized dumbbells feature the same TwistLock adjustment system as the StairMaster TwistLock 100. In order to adjust the weight, you have to place them on their cradles, twist the handles until the desired weight is selected, and simply lift core fitness 5-50 lbs adjustable dumbbells - rubberized handlethem up. Once a certain weight is selected and a dumbbell is lifted from its cradle, the handle will only pick up the appropriate weight plates, the other remaining into the cradle. The cradles actually feature small “keys” that unlock the handles and allow them to be twisted.

All weight plates, except the 2.5 lbs (1.13 kg) ones, are circular, similar to the classic, cast iron weight plates. So, as you twist the handle, the main axle extends, picking them up. This being said, the ends of the handle actually enter the weight plates; therefore the plates cannot fall off, as they don’t connect to the handle via any additional plastic parts. Also, the plates also cannot spin on the axle, as they lock up together.

When it comes to weight, the handle without any plates weighs 5 lbs (2.26 kg). The first plates weigh 2.5 lbs (1.13 kg) each, while the rest of the plates weigh 5 lbs (2.26 kg) each. Differently put, the Core Fitness dumbbells offer a weight range of 5-50 lbs (2.26-22.6 kg) each, with the following possible weight settings: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 lbs (2.26, 4.5, 6.8, 9, 11.3, 13.6, 15.8, 18.1, 20.4, 22.6 kg).

There’s one disadvantage that must be mentioned here, though, regarding the adjustment system of the Core Fitness dumbbells. Weight adjustment for each side of the dumbbell can only be equal. As you twist the handle, both its ends will adjust by the same length, picking up the same number of plates. Therefore, you won’t be able to create an off-set weight, in case you workout regimen requires it.

Cradles

The storage cradles are necessary accessories for the quick weight adjustment for these dumbbells. They’re actually required, as you cannot adjust the dumbbells without them. They’re made of an aluminum/PVC combo, featuring openings at each end, in order to provide a secure grip when moving them with the dumbbells on top. They’re approx. 16″ (40.8 cm) long, and 9″ (23.2 cm) wide.

The cradles can be mounted on a stand, accessory which is not included with the set. This stand is approx. 30″ (76 cm) tall, and makes the adjustment and pick up of the dumbbells much more convenient.
