The Body-Solid S2CC Cable Column is basically a lat machine but its main pulley is mobile allowing the execution of high, mid, and low pulley exercises. Similar to the Body-Solid DLAT-SF model, it’s a commercial-grade fitness machine and comes with a commercial warranty. It’s also available with three different weight stacks (160 lbs, 210 lbs, 310 lbs), so it’s important to mention that in this post, we’re going to address the S2CC/1 version, the one that comes with the 160 lbs (72.5 kg) stack.

Frame construction

The Body-Solid S2CC Cable Column features a heavy-duty commercial-grade construction. Its frame is made of 2 x 3 11-gauge steel tubing. The base bars, the two main upright bars, and the top frame bar of the machine are coated with a corrosion-resistant paint finish gray in color. The two guide rods that hold the weight stack are chrome-plated, while the guide post of the adjustable pulley is made of stainless steel.

This cable column machine also includes several large guards made of durable thermoplastic material. The largest one covers the front part of the machine leaving only a narrow opening at the bottom enough to have access to the weight stack in order to make adjustments. The other plastic guard covers the top of the unit protecting the high pulleys and cable.

The fully assembled machine is not extremely large and bulky compared with other strength training systems, such as the Marcy SM-4033, for example. It is approx. 53″ (135 cm) deep, and 58″ (147 cm) wide. It is recommended, though, to allow at least two feet of clearance on each side of the unit, and at least three-four feet of clearance at the front to be able to execute all the exercises correctly.

The unit is pretty tall as well. With all the parts assembled, its top reaches approx. 99″ (251 cm) above the floor level. This being said, it won’t fit in a room with an 8-foot ceiling. You’ll need a ceiling height for it of at least 8.5′.

The base frame bars rest on small metallic plates with pre-drilled holes in case you may want to secure the machine to the floor. However, the unit’s net weight is approx. 467.6 lbs (212 kg) offering excellent stability so this shouldn’t be necessary. It is recommended to place the unit on a rubber mat, though, as it may damage the floor due to its weight.

Adjustability, parts, and accessories

The Body-Solid S2CC Cable Column integrates 8 heavy-duty pulleys, 4 large, 4 small. They’re fiber-glass reinforced and integrate ball bearings for smooth operation. The unit has only one cable; its exact rating is not specified but it is probably rated for a much higher tensile strength than the 160 lbs (72.5 kg) which is the weight of the stack. Needless to say, it is a steel cable featuring a PVC sleeve to prevent the scratching of the pulleys.

The machine’s front guide post features 36 adjustment positions for the mobile pulley. The pulley holder can swivel 180° in order to adapt better to the exercises that you’re performing. It locks on to the guide post via a pop-pin which is very easy to use.

It’s important to mention that the S2CC cable column machine is equipped with two handlebars. These are curved up and feature PVC sleeves for improved comfort. They attach to the upright frame posts via screws so they’re non-adjustable. They’re great to have when performing low-pulley leg curls, leg abductions, or leg adductions.

The machine comes with three accessories. One is the nylon cable D-handle; this features 3 attachment rings for length adjustment. The second one is the ankle strap, great to have if you want to perform leg exercises. The third one is a short straight bar with a swivel which is meant for all exercises that require the use of both hands. A standard lat bar is not included with the machine, nor is an ab harness.

Weight Resistance

As we’ve mentioned above, the Body-Solid S2CC is available with three different weight stacks, these being 160 lbs (72.5 kg), 210 lbs (95.25 kg), and 310 lbs (140.6 kg). This is the Body-Solid S2CC/1, the one that comes with the 160 lbs (72.5 kg) weight stack. Evidently, the stack is upgradable and you can always opt for the extra plates.

One of the best parts with regards to the machine’s weight stack is that the weight plates are made of cast iron, not cement/plastic as is the case for other home gyms. This is one of the reasons the unit costs quite a bit more. So, regardless if the cable column machine is used in a home gym setting or in a commercial gym, its weight stack can last a lifetime.

The unit’s weight stack consists of 15 weight plates; each one weighs 10 lbs (4.5 kg). The weight carriage itself weighs 10 lbs (4.5 kg). The machine’s weight ratio is 1/2:1. This means that the weight is divided in half. For example, if you select 10 weight plates which along with the carriage will have a total weight of 110 lbs (49.8 kg), the machine will provide a weight resistance of 55 lbs (24.9 kg).

Of course, some of these exercises require additional accessories which are not included. For example, for a wide grip lat pulldown, you will need a standard lat bar, while for a bench press you will obviously need a bench. Some of the seated exercises can be performed with almost any chair available in the average household.

Assembly and Maintenance

The Body-Solid S2CC comes with two large boxes which are pretty heavy and should be carried by two persons. Evidently, the unit requires complete user assembly. The task is not too complicated but may take more than 3-4 hours. The manual provides clear assembly instruction for it. Tools for the assembly are not included. You will need a set of Allen keys, two adjustable wrenches or a standard wrench set, and a Phillips screwdriver.

For maintenance, it is recommended to lubricate the guide rods of the weight stack and the guide bar of the mobile pulley for smooth operation. The pulleys may also need some lubrication from time to time. Other than this, you should periodically inspect the machine to make sure that all the parts still function properly.
