Bayou Fitness offers several fitness products, and all of them are simply top-notch. But their best selling products are by far, the 50 lbs and 25 lbs adjustable dumbbells. In this post we’ll address the Bayou Fitness 50 lbs dumbbells.
But before we proceed with the the full detail presentation of these free weights, there’s one aspect to be mentioned. The 50 lbs dumbbells are available as a set, or as one. Therefore, if you want to order a set of two, look for the ordering number BF-0250, which simply stands for “Bayou Fitness – 2 x 50”, while if you want to order only one, look for the number BF-0150. In this post we’ll refer to the two-dumbbell set.

Overall construction
Just by looking at the images annexed here, you can tell that the weight plates of these dumbbells are made of steel. They feature a nice, shiny chrome finish, which basically makes them corrosion resistant. On the other hand, the weight plates don’t have any other coating, so
as you work out, they will make a soft “clinking” sound as they touch.
The dumbbells’ axle is also steel made, with the grip carved directly into the metal. The handle supplies a safe and secure grip. The first set of weight discs, which actually give each dumbbell the minimum 10 lbs (4.5 kg) weight, are connected directly to the axle via screws, and cannot be removed unless you remove the screws. The other 8 weight plates are removable though.
The dumbbells’ construction also involves several polyurethane parts, such as the outside coating of the non-adjustable discs, and the caps at each end. However, these have more of a cosmetic role than than a sustaining role for the other components.
A final aspect to be mentioned here regards the dimensions of these weights. At a length of 15.75″ (40 cm), and a diameter of 8″ (20.3 cm), they are somewhat bulky. Especially for a short user, certain exercises curls may be a bit awkward. Their dimensions are basically the same as for the Bowflex SelectTech 552.
Adjustment system and increments
The Bayou Fitness dumbbells feature a very solid locking mechanism for the weight plates. All parts involved are highly durable, steel-made. The locking mechanism consists of a metallic tube which connects to the adjusting pin. This metallic tube rides over the metal base of the 
axle, holding the plates in place.
To adjust the weight on the dumbbells, you have to move the selection pin along the axle, and lock it behind the weight plate that you desire, on each side of the dumbbell. Each plate weighs 5 lbs (2.2 kg). Each dumbbell features 8 plates (a total of 40 lbs). The axle itself, with the fixed plates near the middle, weighs 10 lbs (4.5 lbs).
Now, the Bayou Fitness 50 lbs dumbbells are meant to be adjusted in increments of 10 lbs (4.5 kg), with the following settings: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 lbs (4.5, 9.0, 13.6, 18.1, 22.6 kg). However, since each plate weighs 5 lbs (2.26 kg), and there’s a locking pin on each side of the dumbbell, you can actually adjust the weight in increments of 5 lbs, by having one plate more or less on one side. Evidently, this way a dumbbell won’t be balanced, but you can balance it by changing your grip point. Or, you can carry out exercises that are actually more rewarding if you use an offset on each dumbbell.
Accessories
The only accessories that come with these dumbbells are the heavy-duty polyurethane trays, for support and adjustment. These trays feature handles on each side, which makes it easier to carry them with the dumbbells on top. Also, they give the dumbbells an approximate elevation of 1″ (2.5 cm) from the floor level. Therefore, when placed on their trays, the dumbbells height is approx. 9″ (22.8 cm). In other words, in order to fit them under the bed or in another storage place, it should have a minimum of 9″ clearance.
