Frame construction

The Soozier A90-230 2-in-1 trainer combines an elliptical machine and an upright bike. It features a frame made of steel tubing. Most of the frame tubes are cylindrical, the only exceptions being the pedal bars and seat slider which are rectangular, and the seat tube and post which are oval.

Similar to other elliptical trainers and upright exercise bikes, the A90-230 has its drive and resistance elements concealed by a set of ABS guards. The pedal trays, the fitness monitor casing, the heads of the adjustment knobs, and the base bar caps are also made from ABS plastic. All the steel parts are painted black, with a durable paint finish. Most of the ABS parts are also black to fit the color theme of the machine.

This Soozier 2-in-1 trainer is not too large. As we’ve mentioned above, it’s a bit smaller than the A90-256 model. Its net footprint is 40.5″L x 24.5″W (103 x 62 cm). This being said, it should fit pretty well even in a small room. However, it is still recommended to allow a few feet of clearance all around it for easy access.

The machine is not too heavy either. Its net weight is approx. 64 lbs (29 kg). Therefore, it can easily be carried and assembled by only one person. Also, once it is assembled, its relocation can be done even easier as its front base stabilizer has transport wheels. Also, its rear stabilizer is equipped with a set of polygonal caps that can rotate as well, and serve as floor levelers.

Seat and handlebars

The Soozier A90-230 2-in-1 trainer is equipped with a seat similar to the one of an upright exercise bike. The saddle has a pretty standard construction. It is built on a durable yet flexible nylon shell. It attaches to its slider via three screws. Its top cover is made of urethane or other high-density rubber and features a median groove for improved breathability.

The seat offers four-way adjustability (up, down, front, back). Its upright post features 5 adjustment holes and offers an adjustment span between 27.5″ and 32″ (70 – 81 cm) above the floor level. This being said, the trainer should be able to accommodate users between 5’0″ and 6’0″ (153 – 183 cm). Taller persons should still be able to use this machine but they may not benefit from a complete range of motion. Conversely, short persons may not reach the fixed handlebars properly when seated.

The trainer is equipped with two sets of handlebars. One is mobile, the other is fixed. The mobile handlebars attach both the to front upright bar of the trainer and to the pedal bars. Thus, they will always move when you pedal. They have long grips and flat grips at the top.

The fixed handlebars attach to the top section of the front upright bar. Their grips point upward. They lack the flat grips at the top but do integrate pulse sensors. None of the handlebars are adjustable. The moving handlebars reach a height of approx. 59.5″ (151 cm) above the floor level.

Pedal construction, stride, and elliptical path

The Soozier A90-230 dual trainer is equipped with a set of large pedals. As we’ve mentioned above, the pedal trays are made from a durable ABS material. They have guards on their inner sides, at the heel, and at the front, as well as a ribbed surface for improved foot stability.

The pedals are non-adjustable. However, they are large enough to accommodate athletic footwear of all sizes. They attach to two steel bars. The machine has a maximum user rating of 220 lbs (100 kg) which applies to the pedals as well, not just the seat. So, as long as you don’t exceed this weight, you should be able to perform any standing or seated workout on this machine.

The unit offers a fairly short stride. Its stride length is only 7.8″ (20 cm). Therefore, a tall user will not benefit from a complete range of motion. However, as long as the user doesn’t exceed the maximum weight limit, they can still perform a pretty consistent cardio workout.

Since it’s a pretty basic elliptical and bike trainer, it does not have an incline system. However, its elliptical path is slightly inclined forward. This being said, an elliptical ride on this machine resembles a descent on a soft slope. Also, the pedal step-up height is approx. 5″ (12.7 cm), while at their highest point, the pedals reach approx. 15″ (38 cm) above the floor level. This being said, the machine should be used in a room with a ceiling that is at least 20″ (51 cm) higher than the height of the tallest user.

Resistance system

The Soozier A90-230 2-in-1 trainer features a manual magnetic resistance system. In other words, it does not have an internal motor like the Body Champ BRT3858, for example, and you don’t need a power cord or a power adapter for it. But on the other hand, the unit’s fitness monitor cannot adjust the resistance automatically.

The unit’s resistance system has a pretty simple construction. The main resistance element is a magnetic brake attached to the internal flywheel assembly. The brake also connects to the machine’s tension knob through a steel cable. Therefore, when you turn the knob the magnets move closer or farther from the flywheel which increases or decreases the resistance.

This Soozier 2-in-1 trainer offers 8 difficulty levels. On the lowest level, it provides an easy ride, great for recovery training or for a warm-up before a more intense workout. Conversely, the 8th tension level delivers considerably more resistance, great for anyone who wants to burn more calories.

The main advantage of the magnetic resistance is that the magnets do not touch the flywheel. Thus, there is no internal friction, no wear-and-tear, and no maintenance needed. Also, the machine is very quiet when in use.

Drive system

Since it’s a pretty light machine, the Soozier A90-230 also has a fairly light internal flywheel. It weighs only 7 lbs (3.1 kg), so on the lowest resistance levels, the pedaling difficulty is pretty light. However, it has a perimeter-weighted design for improved stability and inertia.

The flywheel is bi-directional. In other words, you can pedal in reverse on this machine. This gives you the possibility to alternate workouts in order to focus different muscle groups. However, coasting is not possible on this machine. The flywheel stops when you stop pedaling. Also, the fitness monitor will cease its distance and calorie counts when you stop pedaling.

The machine has a pretty sturdy crankset. The internal pulley is pretty large in diameter so the machine provides an ample rotation motion. It is made from a durable ABS polymer. The crank arms are cylindrical with a chrome plating finish.

This dual trainer is equipped with a belt drive system. It integrates a poly-v belt. This type of drivetrain delivers slightly less vibration than a chain drive. Thus, it contributes to the overall smoothness of the ride. Also, the belt does not need periodic lubrication.

Fitness monitor

The Soozier 2-in-1 trainer A90-230 is equipped with a fitness monitor that offers a range of features similar to the one included with the pooboo E916 model. It has an LCD display (without backlight) that tracks time, speed, distance, total distance, calories, and pulse. Speed and distance are shown in imperial units. The pulse reading function is grip-only. The unit is not compatible with Bluetooth or other types of heart rate monitors.

The unit does not have pre-set programs or online connectivity, and it is not compatible with any fitness apps. However, it offers the possibility to select workout goals for your workouts. For example, you can set a distance target, a calorie target, or a time target. Once a target is set, the unit will count down from the selected value until it reaches zero. This way, you can keep a better track of your progress.

The monitor unit has three buttons. These are Mode, Set, and Reset. The Mode button covers the navigation function; by pressing it repeatedly, you can scroll through the metrics and select the one your want to view on the display. This way, you can also select the Scan Mode which automatically rotates all the metrics showing each one for approx. 6 seconds. The Reset button clears all the values to zero.

The monitor unit requires two AA batteries as its power source. It starts counting your data when you begin pedaling. It also turns off automatically if it does not detect any activity on the machine for more than 4 minutes. And finally, it integrates a small tray that can serve as phone or tablet holder.

Assembly and Maintenance

The main body of the trainer comes pre-assembled. However, the rest of the parts require user assembly. You will have to attach the two base stabilizers, the front mast, the pedals, the moving arms, the fixed handlebars, the seat, and the fitness monitor. This may take more than an hour of your time, but the task is far from being difficult. Also, the manual provides all the necessary instructions, and all the tools required are included.

For maintenance, you only have to keep the machine clean. The joints of the pedals and moving arms may require lubrication from time to time. The internal parts are pre-lubricated from the factory. The belt drive system does not need any lubrication.
