Frame construction
The Women’s Health Men’s Health 1866 multi-function power tower features a steel frame made of rectangular tubing. All the steel bars in its construction are coated with a corrosion-resistant paint finish. The main color used is black, the only exception being the backrest support bar which has a red paint finish. These are the only colors available for this trainer, at least for the moment.
The fully assembled unit is pretty heavy. Its net weight is approx. 128 lbs (58 kg). It also has a low center of gravity so stability shouldn’t be an issue. But nonetheless, its base bars have small steel plates welded at their ends with pre-drilled holes so you can anchor the unit to the floor, if necessary. The unit also has rubber pads to prevent floor damage, but it still is recommended to place it on a rubber mat especially if it’s not anchored to the floor.
The unit’s base bars are curved at the front. This improves its overall stability. Plus, the curved sections can serve as step-up points when using the dip and leg raise station. The rear sections of the base bars feature three attachment points for the transversal reinforcement bar, so you can attach it closer to the rear or closer to the middle of the base.
Unit’s upright bars are slanted backward for extra stability, and to provide a counter-balance for leg raises. They have 6 attachment points for the adjustable handlebars. There’s also an attachment point for them on the front section of the two base bars for low level dips.
This power tower is not super large. With all the parts assembled, it is approx. 63″ (160 cm) long, while its widest point (at the top pull-up grips) is approx. 48″ (122 cm). The unit is 83″ (210 cm) tall, so it can fit in a room with a 7-foot ceiling. However, it is recommended to leave at least one foot of clearance above it to be able to execute all the pull-up exercises correctly. It’s also recommended to allow at least two feet of clearance on each side of the tower, and at least three feet of clearance at its front.
Workout stations
The Women’s Health Men’s Health 1866 power offers three workout stations. These are a multi-grip pull-up station, a dip and leg raise station, and an adjustable workout station.
Pull-up station. The tower’s pull-up station features multiple grip sets. It offers the possibility to perform pull-ups or chin-ups with either a wide grip, a close grip, or a parallel grip. As we’ve mentioned above, the distance between the ends of the top wide grips is 48″ (122 cm). The grips have a layer of PVC foam for improved contact. Also, they’re sturdy enough to support loads up to 400 lbs (181 kg).
Dip and leg raise station. The WHMH 1866 power tower is equipped with a sturdy ergonomic dip and leg raise station. They are equipped with foam cushions covered by a layer of durable vinyl material. The dip arms also have dual grips at their ends with an inward incline of approx. 1°. There are two adjustment positions for the upright grips. They offer support for leg raise exercises, while the horizontal grips offer support for dips. Both grips have PVC foam sleeves similar to the ones on the pull-up bars.
The tower’s backrest is non-adjustable. It’s not super large either, but does have a thick (3″) layer of foam cushioning so it should be able to provide the required support for leg raises and other similar exercises. Its cover is made of durable vinyl material which is sweatproof and easy to maintain.
Adjustable station. This workout station consists of a set of handles similar to the pull-up ones on one end and a set of 4″ foam rollers on the other. There are 7 attachment points for them on the tower, 6 of them are on the upright bars, the 7th is on the base bars. These offer the possibility to execute all kinds of pull-up exercises, dips, and even upside-down abdominal exercises.
