The GoElliptical V-450T is one of the newer cross trainers in the GoElliptical “Vena” series. It is similar to the older standard V-450 model that we’ve already reviewed. It’s a bit different from the standard model, though. Some of the differences are the larger footprint, the lack of adjusters for the pedal size, and a different design for the fixed handlebars.

Frame construction

The GoElliptical V-450T is a rear-drive elliptical machine featuring a pretty robust construction. Most of its frame is made of steel tubing with the exception of the drive elements covers, pedal trays, and several other small covers.

One of the important features to mention here is the adjustability of the upright moving arms. Each arm has three adjustment positions and an adjustment knob at the base. Not all elliptical trainers have this feature; it clearly can be quite a plus for taller users. The machine also has fixed handlebars. These are non-adjustable. They are equipped with pulse sensors and resistance adjustment controls.

Most of the frame is coated with a corrosion-resistant and chip-resistant paint finish. The only exceptions are the superior parts of the moving arms. These are made of stainless steel.

The GoElliptical V-450T cross trainer is a bit bulkier than the average trainer made for home use. It is approx. 59″ (150 cm) long, and 28″ (71 cm) wide, while the top of its moving arms reaches approx. 65″ (165 cm) above floor level. It is also recommended to leave at least two feet of clearance all around it for ease of access and correct usage.

The fully assembled trainer is also pretty heavy. It weighs approx. 132 lbs (60 kg). This means that the packaged unit should be carried by two persons. But on the other hand, all this weight plays an important role in its overall stability. Plus, both base bars have floor stabilizers.

Although the machine is heavy, it is fairly easy to move once it is assembled. Its front base is equipped with a set of transport wheels. So, by using these wheels to relocate your cross trainer, you won’t be handling more than 30%-35% of its total weight.

Stride, elliptical path, and step-up height

First of all, the GoElliptical V-450T cross trainer is equipped with a set of large pedals. They are attached to durable steel bars. Both the pedals and the crank elements are rated for a maximum user weight capacity of 300 lbs (136 kg), which is not bad for a home-use machine. The pedals lack the adjustability feature that the V-450X model has. However, they’re large enough to accommodate athletic footwear of all sizes. They are also textured and have side guards for improved foot stability.

The machine offers a stride of 17″ (43 cm). This is a medium-range stride. This means the machine should accommodate comfortably users up to 6’1″ – 6’2″ (185 – 188 cm). However, taller persons should also be able to use this elliptical but the range of motion may be a bit short for them.

Similar to many other rear-drive elliptical trainers, the GoElliptical V-450T has an elliptical path that is slightly inclined forward. This means that the pedaling motion resembled a descent on a soft ramp. The position of the elliptical path and the length of the stride cannot be adjusted. Also, the trainer does not have an adjustable incline system.

One last aspect to cover here is the pedal step-up height. The pedals are at approx. 6″ (15 cm) above floor level when at their lowest position. Conversely, their highest point is at approx. 16″ (40 cm) above floor level. Thus, it is recommended to use the machine in a room with a ceiling that is at least 20″ (51 cm) higher than your own height.

Drive and resistance

The GoElliptical V-450T cross trainer features a motorized-magnetic resistance system. This means it can adjust the resistance automatically, depending on the program in use. It also means that it requires an external power source. A power adapter is included with it.

The trainer’s resistance system consists of an eddy current brake and a servo motor connected to the console. Therefore, when you adjust the resistance from the console, or when a program automatically adjusts the resistance, the motor changes the pull of the magnetic brake which applies more or less drag on the internal flywheel.

The machine makes available 24 levels of resistance. Due to the rather heavy flywheel, the first few levels are not super light; they provide quite a consistent pedaling motion. Conversely, the top tension levels offer quite a challenge even to a seasoned user.

Similar to the V-450X model, this GoElliptical cross trainer is equipped with an inertia-enhanced flywheel which offers a 44 lbs (20 kg) load and a speed ratio of 1:12.7. The flywheel also permits reverse pedaling and when pedaling in reverse, the console continues to monitor your distance traveled, speed, etc. However, it is important to mention that coasting is not possible on this machine.

This elliptical machine is equipped with a belt drive system. It integrates a J6 poly-v belt. This type of transmission comes with several advantages. First of all, it does not require lubrication; this also stands for the rest of the internal components. And second of all, the pedaling motion is very smooth and whisper-quiet.

Console

The console included with the GoElliptical V-450T is similar to the one of the first model. It features a tri-color, 5.5″ LCD display, with LED backlight for improved readability. The display is divided into several sub-sections in order to show as many workout metrics as possible at once, so you don’t have to scroll through them all the time in order to select the one you want to view. It tracks time, speed, RPM, distance, calories, and pulse. Speed and distance can be set either to English or Metric units.

The console is not telemetric. This means it cannot track your pulse via a wireless HR chest strap. It can only monitor your pulse if you hold on to the sensors integrated into the fixed handlebars.

The machine’s console unit does not have any online compatibility. It does not have Bluetooth or WiFi, and is not compatible with any existing fitness apps. Therefore, it doesn’t offer the possibility to track your progress online. However, it has multiple built-in programs.

In terms of workout programs, the console offers the Manual mode, 12 pre-set programs, a custom program, 4 user profiles, a fitness test, an HRC program, and a recovery function. The Manual mode allows you to pedal freely and make resistance adjustments via the rotary control on the console. The pre-set programs cover various workouts; some are interval-based, others are great for losing weight, while others will help you improve your stamina. The HRC program adjusts the resistance automatically depending on the selected heart rate zone, in order to keep your BPM in this interval, while the custom program offers the possibility for your to create your own desired workout.

Since the console has four user profiles, up to four users can save their own custom settings with age, gender, height, and weight, custom program, or other program settings, and more. And finally, the recovery function counts your pulse at the end of the workout in order to determine your fitness level. It will also give you a fitness rating based on the result, between F1-excellent, and F6 – poor.

Three other notable console features that we must mention here are the sound system, the USB charging port, and the device holder. The USB port allows you to connect your smartphone or tablet to recharge it as you pedal. The sound system consists of two small speakers integrated into the console and an AUX port. Thus, you can connect your smartphone, tablet, or MP3 player to it and play your music through the integrated speakers. And finally, the device holder consists of a small shelf placed between the rotary control and the other buttons on the console.

Assembly and Maintenance

The base of the cross trainer with all the drive and resistance elements comes pre-assembled. The rest of the parts, however, do require user assembly. This being said, you will have to attach the two base stabilizers, the front upright mast, the pedals, the handlebars, and the console. This may take more than an hour, but the task is far from being complicated. Plus, the included manual provides clear assembly instructions and all the necessary tools are included.

Internal maintenance is not necessary for this elliptical machine. So, in terms of maintenance, you only have to check for loose bolts and parts, and lubricate the joints of the machine in case they begin to squeak.
