Frame construction
The Weslo Pursuit G 3.1 recumbent exercise bike features a frame design similar to the Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RB4417 with an oblique main chassis. However, it lacks the base reinforcement bar and the seat does not adjust that easily. The bike’s frame is made of steel, combining rectangular and cylindrical tubes in its construction. It consists of two main pieces, the front piece that holds the drive mechanism, and the rear piece that holds the seat. The two parts connect in the middle via two bolts.
All the steel bars are coated with a corrosion-resistant paint finish, gray in color. The only major non-metallic parts in the bike’s construction are the covers of the drive mechanism. These are made of durable thermoplastic material.
The bike is not extremely large. With all the parts assembled, it is approx. 52″ (132 cm) long, and 23″ (58 cm) wide. It is recommended, though, to leave at least two feet of clearance on each side of it, for ease of access.
The bike is not too heavy either. It weighs only approx. 58 lbs (26 kg) so it can be carried and assembled by only one person. Plus, its front base stabilizer features rotating caps that can serve as transport wheels.
The bike’s frame doesn’t fold and it’s not meant to be stored vertically. But in case you’ll need to store it in a smaller place, you can easily disassemble the two frame pieces.
Seat and handlebars
The Weslo Pursuit G 3.1 features a fairly comfortable seat with a large backrest. The seat is approx. 14″ (35 cm) wide, so it offers plenty of contact surface. Both the backrest and the bottom section of the seat integrate a thick layer of foam padding. Also, their covers are made of durable vinyl material which is easy to maintain.
The bike’s seat is adjustable, but its adjustment is not very easy to carry out. The inclined bar to which the seat attaches features 6 holes to which you can attach the seat by two screws. There is no adjustment knob or lever for this purpose. Therefore, in order to adjust the seat, you will have to use a screwdriver to loosen the screws, move the seat, and fix it in the desired position. The applicable user height range is only 5’2″ – 6’0″ (157 – 183 cm). Also, the maximum weight limit of the bike is 250 lbs (113 kg).
The Pursuit G 3.1 recumbent exercise bike is equipped with two sets of handlebars. One attaches to the seat assembly, the other to the front mast of the bike. They are non-adjustable. They feature short grips with high-density foam sleeves for improved comfort. They do not integrate pulse sensors and the bike does not have a pulse reading function.
Resistance and drive
The Weslo Pursuit G 3.1 exercise bike is equipped with a manual magnetic resistance system. Therefore, you don’t need an adapter for it. However, the included fitness monitor cannot adjust the resistance automatically and it does not have workout programs.
The bike’s resistance system consists of a magnetic brake integrate into its internal flywheel system and connected to the tension knob on the front unit. By turning the knob, the magnets shift their position in relation to the flywheel which adds or reduces the overall resistance.
There are 10 resistance levels available on this Weslo exercise bike. The first level provides little resistance, which makes it adequate for users who require recovery training. Conversely, the 10th level of resistance delivers a better workout for the legs and gives you the possibility to achieve a higher heart rate in a shorter period of time.
The exact weight of the internal flywheel is not specified but considering the total weight of the bike (58 lbs), it probably doesn’t weigh more than 20 lbs (9 kg). It has a perimeter-weighted structure for improved inertia. It is also bi-directional, allowing the user to pedal in reverse.
The bike’s internal drivetrain features a durable V-ribbed rubber belt. This being said, its transmission does not require any lubrication. It also delivers a smoother pedaling motion than a chain drive because it generates slightly less vibration.
The bike is equipped with a 3-piece crankset featuring a large pulley (actually slightly larger in diameter than the flywheel). It has fairly long, steel arms for an ampler motion. The pedals are made of durable thermoplastic material. They have adjustable straps and weight elements which enable them to always self-level.
Fitness monitor
The Weslo Pursuit G 3.1 comes with a fairly basic console, but it does offer a few extra features over the older model. It has a large LCD display that tracks time, distance, speed, and calories burned. It does not have a pulse reading function. Therefore, if you want to track your pulse, you will have to use a separate device. Also, speed and distance are shown only in English units (mph and miles). They cannot be set to metric units.
The monitor unit features three buttons – Mode, Set, and Reset. The Mode button allows you to scroll through the workout metrics and select the one you want to view, or select the Scan Mode which automatically rotates the metrics showing each one for a few seconds. The Set button offers the possibility to set up goals for time, distance, and calories burned. If a goal is selected for any of these, the monitor will count down from the selected value until it reaches zero.
The fitness monitor unit is battery-powered. It requires two AA batteries which are not included. Once batteries are installed, it automatically powers on when you begin pedaling or when you press one of the buttons. It also automatically powers off if it does not detect pedal movement for a few minutes.
Assembly and Maintenance
The front unit of the bike with the drive and resistance elements comes pre-assembled. However, the rest of the parts require user assembly. You will basically have to connect the two main frame pieces together, connect the two base stabilizers the front mast, the fitness monitor, the seat, and the pedals. This may take one hour of your time the process is fairly simple. Plus, the manual provides clear assembly instructions and all the necessary tools are included.
Once the bike is assembled, you don’t have to worry too much about maintenance. The belt does not require lubrication. You basically only have to wipe off the sweat from the frame at the end of the workout, keep the bike clean, and periodically check for loose bolts or broken parts.
