Frame and deck
The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-T7909 treadmill features a pretty sturdy frame made of thick steel tubing. It’s quite heavy as well for a light-capacity machine; with all the parts assembled, it weighs approx. 114.6 lbs (52 kg). This being said, the transport of the boxed unit, may require two people. However, once the unit is assembled, its relocation can be done with ease because its front metallic base and rear feet are equipped with wheels.
The Sunny SF-T7909 has a folding frame. Its deck can be folded up and locked in a vertical position. With the deck folded up, its footprint is reduced to 26″L x 30″W (66 x 76 cm), while its height becomes 54″ (137 cm). The unit’s folding mechanism involves a hydraulic cylinder which prevents the deck from dropping while you unfold it.
Conversely, with the deck unfolded, this Sunny Health & Fitness treadmill isn’t too large compared with other machines, such as the NordicTrack Commercial 2950, for example. It is approx. 61″ (155 cm) long, and 30″ (76 cm) wide. However, it is recommended to leave at least three feet of clearance at the rear of the deck, and at least two feet of clearance on each side of the machine for unhindered usage and ease of access.
The unit’s deck is rated for a weight capacity of 220 lbs (100 kg). It integrates a heavy-duty rubber belt which offers a running surface of 48.5″L x 16.5″W (123L x 42W cm). This being said, it should fit users up to 6’0″ (183 cm) with no problem, and even taller users if they only engage in walking workouts or light jogging.
The deck integrates 8 cushion elements (4 on each side) which are design to absorb a percentage of the impact on your joints during exercising. The front of the deck features blue cushions which are softer, in order to reduce the shock generated by each footstrike. The rear section of the deck features black cushion elements which are firmer, in order to provide a better push for each foot. All the cushions are concealed by the ABS rail covers.
The Sunny SF-T7909 features two sets of hand grips. It has the two regular hand grips like most other treadmills but also has a set of vertical grips which are meant to provide better support during an incline workout. These vertical grips can easily be removed if necessary.
Last but not least, all the steel parts within the machine’s construction are coated with a rust-resistant paint finish. The color used is gray, with the exception of the extra hand grips which are painted red.
Incline and step-up height
The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-T7909 treadmill is equipped with an automatic incline system. This means you can adjust the incline from the console during your workouts. Also, the machine’s console has 12 programs which automatically adjust the incline of the deck depending on the current segment of the workout.
The unit’s incline system consists of a small lift and a motor separate from the drive motor that power the belt. They’re both situated under the front cover. As the incline is adjusted, the incline motor controls the lift which elevates or lowers the front of the deck.
The machine’s incline system offers 12 levels of incline for a total of 12%. The incline increments are 1%. There are incline controls for gradual adjustment integrated into the left grip of the unit and on the left side of the console. However, the machine does not offer quick incline keys (for example, to immediately select the 8th level if you want).
The treadmill doesn’t have a very high step-up height. With the incline set to 0%, the walking surface is at approx. 8″ (21 cm) above floor level. Conversely, with the incline set all the way up to the top level of incline, the front of the deck becomes elevated by a few extra inches. Therefore, you should place and use the machine in a room with ceiling height that is at least 15″ (38 cm) above your own height.
Drive motor
The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-T7909 is a treadmill designed for walking or jogging. Therefore, it doesn’t have an extremely powerful motor like the ones made for running, but it is powerful enough to withstand prolonged workouts. The motor has a peak power of 1.5 HP. It is also equipped with a small flywheel to reduce vibration and provide extra stability for the belt.
The unit’s drive motor offers a speed range between 0.6 MPH and 7.5 MPH. The console counts the speed and distance in MPH and miles, and there is no option for metric units. The speed adjustment increments are 0.1 km/h, which is great because it gives you the possibility to adjust the speed of the belt slowly and gradually until you find the perfect pace for your workout.
Just as for the incline, the Sunny SF-T7909 features only gradual speed control keys. One set of speed controls are integrated into the right hand grip, the other is on the console, on the right side.
In terms of generated noise, the motor is not too loud. However, if you run at the highest speed settings, your cadence will be heard. Also, since it’s not an extremely powerful motor, you don’t have to worry about increased electricity bills even if you use the machine daily.
Console
The Sunny SF-T7909 treadmill features a mid-range console with four LED displays which track the most important workout metrics. From left to right, the first display shows the level of incline and the calories burned, the second display indicates the elapsed time (or the goal time), the third display shows steps and distance traveled, and the fourth display shows speed and pulse.
As we’ve mentioned above, the speed and distance values are only shown in imperial units (MPH and miles); there is no setting for metric units. Also, the console is not telemetric. In other words, it cannot track your pulse through a Polar wireless transmitter. You can only benefit from a pulse reading by holding on to the sensors integrated into the side grips of the machine.
The console does not have online connectivity, nor it is compatible with any online fitness apps. However, it does have 12 preset programs to keep you motivated. Each program controls both speed and incline. Each program has 10 distinct segments. Also, you can select the duration for each program and each segment will last for a tenth of the total selected duration.
Goal settings for time, distance, and calories burned are available as well. If you select a goal for any of these metrics, the console will count down from the selected value until it reaches zero.
One last fitness-related function provided by the console is the BMI (Body Mass Index) calculator. This is basically the 13th program. If selected, this program will prompt you to input your data (age, height, weight, gender) and based on your input, it will calculate the percentage of your body fat. This function can help you keep a better track of your fitness goals.
Several other notable features provided by the machine’s console are the sound system, the USB charging port, and the tablet holder. The sound system consists of two speakers one on each side of the console. They have Bluetooth connectivity so you can play your music through them without a cable connection. Bluetooth connection does not have other functions, though; you cannot transfer your workout data into a fitness account if you have one. This also goes for the USB connection. This only serves the purpose of charging your device. And finally, the tablet holder is placed at the top of the console and is large enough to accommodate any tablet or smartphone.
Assembly and Maintenance
The Sunny SF-T7909 come fully assembled. All you have to do is unfold it, lock the two front masts in a vertical position via four bolts, and add the front grips if you want. This shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes. The manual provides step-by-step instructions and illustrations, and all the necessary tools are included.
In terms of maintenance, the belt must be lubricated before the first use and after every 188 miles traveled. The console has a lubrication reminder function. Other than this, it is recommended to keep the belt clean and periodically check for loose bolts, or re-align the belt if it’s the case.
