Frame construction

The Sunny Health & Fitness Elite Interactive SF-B220045 upright exercise bike features a steel frame combining oval and rectangular bars in its construction. All the steel parts are double-coated with a durable paint finish. The color used is gray, with the “Sunny” logo painted in red and white; these are the only colors available for this bike, at least for the moment.

Of course, the bike also integrates several plastic parts. For example, the large guards of the drive and resistance elements, the console casing, the base bar end caps, the adjustment knob caps, and several other small parts are made from a tough ABS polymer. These don’t play an important role in the bike’s sturdiness and stability, though; their role is cosmetic or protective.

Like most other upright exercise bikes, the Sunny SF-B220045 has a pretty small footprint. It is approx. 41.7″ (106 cm) long, and 22.6″ (57 cm) wide. You’ll still have to allow at least two feet of clearance all around it, for easy access and safe usage.

The bike is not too heavy either. Its net weight is approx. 63.8 lbs (29 kg), so it can be carried and assembled by only one person. Once it is removed from the box and assembled, it is even easier to relocate. Its front stabilizer has transport wheels. Also, both its base stabilizers have adjustable levelers.

Seat and handlebar

The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B220045 is equipped with a four-way adjustable seat (up, down, front, back). Its upright post has 7 adjustment holes while its horizontal bar adds a few inches of front-to-back adjustment. This being said, the bike should be able to accommodate users with an inseam between 26″ – 36.6″ (66 – 93 cm). Differently put, it should fit users between 5’0″ and 6’6″ (153 – 198 cm). The bike is also rated for a maximum user weight limit of 275 lbs (125 kg).

The saddle is a pretty standard one. It is built on a nylon shell with a layer of padding and a cover from a durable closed-cell foam material. Its slider has a triangular plate to which the saddle attaches via three screws. The saddle is pretty large, approx. 12.6″L x 12.2″W (32 x 31 cm), so it provides plenty of contact surface. it is also contoured for extra breathability.

The bike is equipped with a multi-grip handlebar. It offers the possibility to adopt a low grip, an oblique grip, and a climbing grip. Its side grips have rubber-foam sleeves for comfortable and secure contact. They also integrate metallic pulse sensors and the console can monitor your heart rate if you hold on to them.

The bike’s handlebar is non-adjustable. It attaches to the bike’s upright post via two screws so you cannot adjust its angle either, as is the case for the Stamina 345. The front upright post is slightly inclined forward and the highest point of the handlebar is 53.1″ (135 cm).

Resistance system

The Sunny SF-B220045 Elite Interactive exercise bike is equipped with a magnetic resistance system. It is not motorized, though, so you don’t need to connect it to a power source. The only power source required for it is a set of AA batteries. It’s also important to mention here, that since the bike is not motorized, the console cannot control the resistance automatically.

The bike integrates a mechanical magnetic brake which is concealed by the base frame guards. The brake is attached under the flywheel and connects to the bike’s tension knob. Thus, when you turn the knob right or left, the magnets move closer or farther from the flywheel which increases or decreases the pedaling difficulty.

As opposed to an exercise bike with a standard friction resistance system, the magnetic resistance system comes with quite a bunch of advantages. For example, since the magnets don’t touch the flywheel, the pedaling motion is very smooth and quiet. The brake doesn’t suffer wear-and-tear, so you don’t have to worry about brake pad replacements. Lubricating the brake pad is not necessary either.

The bike offers 12 levels of resistance. The lowest resistance level is fairly light and great for a workout warm-up or muscle toning. Conversely, on the 10-12 settings, the bike offers quite a challenge even for a seasoned user, simulating a hill climb.

Drive system

The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B220045 upright bike is equipped with a 9 lbs (4 kg) flywheel which is concealed completely by the drive system covers. Although it’s not as heavy as the flywheel of a spin bike, it still is perimeter-weighted, which means it provides a pretty consistent momentum.

The flywheel is bi-directional. In other words, pedaling in reverse is possible on this bike. Coasting is not possible, though. When you stop pedaling, the flywheel also stops from spinning and the console ceases the count for calories, distance, etc. Also, when you pedal in reverse, the resistance remains constant, determined by the selected tension level.

The bike is belt-driven. It integrates a PJ400 poly-v belt highly resistant to abrasion. As opposed to a chain drive, the belt drive comes with a few advantages. For example, the belt generates slightly less vibration than a chain, and you don’t have to lubricate it.

The bike’s crankset is pretty sturdy as well, featuring flat steel arms with a chrome plating finish. However, even though they’re similar to the crank arms of a road bike, the Sunny SF-B220045 is not meant for standing on the pedals. Like most other upright bikes, it’s meant for seated workouts.

The included pedals are made of a durable nylon material. They have weight elements so they always self-level when you remove your feet from them. They also have adjustable straps. The exact Q-Factor of the bike is not specified, but as a general idea, it is narrower than 200 mm, so the pedaling motion is pretty comfortable.

Console

The Sunny Elite Interactive SF-B220045 upright bike is equipped with a fairly decent console. It features an LCD display divided into 6 sub-sections, so it can show up to 6 workout metrics at once, which is a plus. It tracks time, speed, RPM, distance, calories, and pulse. Speed and distance are shown in imperial units (MPH and miles). The pulse reading function is grip only. The console is battery-powered and requires two AA batteries.

The console does not have pre-set workout programs but does offer the possibility to select workout goals for time, distance, calories, and pulse. If a goal is set for time, distance, or calories, the console counts down from the selected value until it reaches zero. The heart rate goal function is a bit different. You select an HR interval and the bike will prompt you to increase or decrease your RPM, so you can remain within the selected HR interval.

A pulse recovery function and a body fat function are also available. These have pre-set buttons on the console. The recovery function determines how fast your heart rate returns to a normal BPM after the workout and based on the result, it rates your fitness level. The body fat function calculates your body mass index based on your data such as weight, height, age, and gender.

One of the best features of the bike’s console is the Bluetooth connectivity. You can sync your bike to your phone or tablet via the SunnyFit app which is free, and available for both iOS and Android systems. The app offers the possibility to track your progress online, view workout videos, and ride on various virtual trails around the world.

Last but not least, the console has a device holder. It also has a sleep mode; it will enter its sleep mode if it does not detect any activity on the bike for more than 4 minutes. In sleep mode, it indicates room temperature, calendar, and clock.

Assembly and Maintenance

The bike’s drive and resistance elements come pre-assembled. You only have to attach the base bars, the seat post, the seat, the pedals, the front upright bar, the handlebars, and the console. This shouldn’t take more than an hour. All the necessary tools for the task are included. Also, the manual provides clear assembly instructions.

Once the bike is assembled, you don’t have to worry too much about maintenance. The internal parts are pre-lubricated from the factory and shouldn’t need any further lubrication. So, all you have to do is keep the bike clean and periodically check for loose bolts or parts.
