Frame and deck
The Schwinn 830 MY16 is a mid range treadmill, designed for home use. One of the main indicators for that is the folding design of the deck. The SoftDrop folding mechanism consists of a hydraulic cylinder, which slows down the unfolding of the deck. But nonetheless, this running machine features quite a solid construction, similar to a commercial grade model. It’s also considerably heavy. It’s assembled weight is 200 lbs (91 kg), weight that renders it extremely stable. You can be sure it won’t move or wobble as you run on it.
Although it’s not exactly a small machine, it’s still not one of the largest. It takes 72″L x 35″W (183 x 89 cm) of floor space, but keep in mind that just as any other treadmill, it requires at least 2′ of clearance on the sides and at least 3′ at the rear, for safe operation. With the deck folded up, it’s length is reduced by more than 50% though, which results in better storage possibilities. On top of that, the front part of the metallic frame integrates a set of wheels, which facilitate the machine’s relocation, with the deck folded up.
Evidently, the frame of the machine is made of steel tubing. It also integrates several PVC parts, but they all fulfill cosmetic or protective purposes, without playing any role in its overall sturdiness. All steel parts are coated with corrosion and scratch resistant dark gray paint, this being the only color available at the moment.
The Schwinn MY16 830 treadmill features a 4-cell cushioning system, rendering the deck more forgiving for all workouts. Needless to say, due to this fact you can run longer, and benefit of a more consistent workout.
This Schwinn treadmill uses a 1-ply, 1.5 mm thick, heavy-duty belt. It’s motion is powered by a set of 2.5″, crowned rollers, which supply an excellent contact with the belt, thus contributing to the smoothness of the run. The belt offers a running surface of 20″ (50.8 cm) width and 55″ (139.7 cm) in length. This means that it can accommodate users, up to 6’4″ (193 cm) tall. Evidently, taller users can also use this treadmill, but they might not be able to put up a maximum stride comfortably. Also, the deck solid enough to support users up to 300 lbs (136 kg).
Incline & step-up height
The Schwinn MY16 830 is equipped with a motorized incline mechanism. This means incline can only be adjusted from the console. Also, since the machine’s console has several pre-set workouts that involve incline, if you select one of these workouts, incline (and speed), will adjust automatically.
The treadmill’s incline range is 0% – 12%. The incline increments are 1%, which basically means there are 12 incline settings. The console has buttons for gradual adjustment (in 1% increments), but it also has quick incline adjustment keys, for 0, 2, 4, 7, 10, 12 incline settings.
The machine’s step-up height is 9″ (23 cm) with the deck at 0% incline. At maximum incline, the highest point of the deck is approx. 14″ (35.5 cm) above floor level. Therefore, to avoid any ceiling issues, add at least 20″ (51 cm) to your own height and compare the result with the ceiling height in the room where the machine will be in use.
Motor
Just as the LifeSpan TR3000i, this Schwinn running machine is equipped with a 2.75 CHP motor. This motor is powerful enough to sustain prolonged running sessions, even at full speed, without overheating or lose performance. It’s also equipped with a small flywheel, offering a steadier motion.
The motor offers a speed range between 0.5 – 12 MPH. Speed can be adjusted in increments of 0.1 MPH, which is quite a plus, as you can easily find the pace that fits your desired workout. But nonetheless, the belt’s first speed setting is 0.5; you can’t decrease the speed under 0.5 MPH.
The console has keys for both gradual and quick adjustment of speed. The quick keys will give you access to the 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12 speed settings, great feature for interval workouts.
The motor features excellent responsiveness to speed adjusting. It’s very quiet, so you won’t have to worry about its noise interfering with the sound of your TV or your music. Also, there’s no need to worry about electricity bill going up too much. Even if you’ll use it for 1 hour every day, at maximum capacity, it shouldn’t add more than $10 the electricity bill.
The machine comes with a 4′ (122 cm) power cord which plugs into the case of the motor, at the front base of the machine. Near the power input there’s also an On/Off switch. This treadmill requires a nominal 120-V circuit, with a standard American outlet. To plug into a different outlet format, you will need an adapter.
Console unit
The machine’s console unit is almost identical to the 830 MY13 model. There’s one difference though. The files that you can copy onto a USB device are now compatible with many more online apps, not only ScwhinnConnect and MyFitnessPal. You can also save your workout data and track it via apps like GoogleFit, Apple Health, MapMyRun/Ride, Endomondo and others. But keep in mind that the console is not Bluetooth capable, thereby you cannot directly sync it with your smartphone or tablet, in order to directly use the online fitness apps.
The console is equipped with a blue backlit 3×5″ LCD display, which provides excellent readability even if the machine is placed in a room with poor lighting. It tracks distance, speed, time, calories, pace, heart rate, laps, goal metrics, and records. It has goal tracking functions, which allow you to preset your time, calories and distance, displaying how much you’ve completed from your goal, and how much there is remaining. The goal tracking function can also indicate metrics from your last workout, last week’s workout, or last month’s workout. This gives you an excellent overview on your progress.
Distance can be set in miles or km. There’s also a track function, showing distance as a 32-segment track, each segment corresponding to a distance of 12.5 m (41 ft).
The console has 22 pre-set workout programs, including 1 manual, 2 custom, 3 quick goal, 3 weight loss, 3 for interval training, 5 for training, 5 for cardio. This is actually quite an impressive amount of programs for a medium treadmill. There are more powerful training machines of this type out there, which don’t offer this amount of training programs. Also, along with these training programs, the console can support up to 4 user profiles, great function to have if several people use the treadmill, or you simply want to quickly swap between two or multiple, distinctive settings.
The console can monitor pulse via Polar HR transmitters, but such an accessory is not supplied with the machine. But in case you don’t have one, you can still benefit from the pulse reading function by using the stainless steel sensors integrated in the front handlebars.
In terms of amenities, the console integrates a sound system, cooling fan, tablet tray and two accessory trays. The sound system is compatible with most tablets, smartphones or MP3 players. It consists of two acoustic chamber stereo speakers, which provide quite an excellent sound. The console does not have keys for volume control though, so you have to control the volume from your device.
The cooling fan has 3 speed settings. It’s not extremely powerful, but still, it does offer a bit of cooling during a more intense workout. The tablet tray (or reading rack) is placed above the console display. Thus, a tablet placed on it won’t obstruct the view of your workout stats. And finally, the accessory trays are large enough to hold your water bottle, TV remote control, phone, keys, earplugs etc.
Assembly and Maintenance
The 2016 Schwinn 830 model isn’t difficult to assemble. Its deck actually comes ready-assembled attached to the metallic frame, with the belt and motors enclosed by the plastic cover. All you need to do is add the upright tubes, and the console. This shouldn’t take more than one hour. The manual supplied will guide you step by step through the assembly task. Also, the tools required for assembly and belt adjustment are included.
Once you receive your treadmill, it’s important to log onto the Schwinn website to register your product, in order to benefit from its full warranty.
Maintenance requires the periodic lubrication of the belt. The manual specified that it should be lubricated after every 25 hours of use, using a silicone-based lubricant. Also, the running belt should be kept clean, to prevent any textile fibers, animal hair (if you have pets), dirt or other objects to be dragged into the motor.
