The pooboo D720 is one of the upright bikes released in the second part of 2020. As opposed to the pooboo S211 model that we’ve already reviewed here, the D720 offers fewer resistance levels (only 8) and lacks the front-to-back adjustment feature for the seat. It’s an exercise bike made for indoor home use, one of the most affordable pooboo bikes at the moment.

Frame construction
The pooboo D720 upright exercise bike features a steel frame combining oval, cylindrical, and rectangular tubing in its construction. All the steel tubes are coated with a rust-resistant and chip-resistant paint finish. The color used is black, this being the only color available at least for the moment. The base body of the bike features large covers for the drive and resistance elements made of thermoplastic material. These combine black, white, and red colors for an extra aesthetic touch.
The fully assembled bike is fairly light compared to other models. It weighs approx. 48 lbs (21.7 kg) so it can easily be carried and assembled by only one person. Also, once it is assembled, it can easily be relocated as its front stabilizer features a set of small transport wheels.
Although the bike is not super heavy, it offers fairly decent stability. That’s because it has a low center of gravity. Also, its rear stabilizer is equipped with two polygonal caps which can be rotated acting as levelers.
The bike does not take too much space. Its assembled footprint is approx. 33.7″L x 19.7″W (85 x 50 cm), while its highest point reaches approx. 52.8″ (134 cm) above floor level. It is recommended, though, to allows at least a 2-foot clearance all around it for ease of access and safe usage.
Seat and handlebars
The pooboo D720 is equipped with a pretty standard saddle. Its inner platform is made of durable nylon material while its top cover is padded and contoured for extra comfort. It attaches to its post via three screws and also has a median groove for improved breathability.
The bike’s seat is only two-way adjustable (up, down). As we’ve mentioned above, it does not have a front-to-back adjustment feature. Its upright post offers several adjustment positions with an adjustment span of approx. 8″ (20.3 cm), from 30.3″ to 38.2″ (76.9 – 97 cm). This being said, it should be able to accommodate users up to 6’2″ (188 cm) with no problem. Also, this exercise bike has a maximum user weight limit of 300 lbs (136 kg).
The bike’s handlebar has a multi-grip design. Its side grips are covered by high-density PVC foam sleeves. They integrate metallic pulse sensors and the included fitness monitor has a pulse reading function.
The handlebar is non-adjustable. It attaches to the bike’s front upright post via screws so you cannot adjust its angle as is the case for the Schwinn 130 MY20, for example. The upright post is non-adjustable either. It attaches to the base frame via several screws so you cannot lower the handlebar.
Drive system
The pooboo D720 is equipped with a fairly light flywheel. It weighs only 8.8 lbs (4 kg) so it doesn’t offer a very consistent inertia as is the case for a spin bike, for example. This being said, the bike can be used for recovery training as it does not deliver a very high impact on the user’s joints.
The flywheel is perimeter-weighted, though. This type of construction leads to improved motion stability. It is also bi-directional. Thus, you can pedal in reverse if you want, so you can focus different muscle groups. Also, when pedaling in reverse, the resistance remains the same, given by the selected level on the tension knob.
The bike is equipped with a 3-piece crankset featuring cylindrical arms made of solid steel with a chrome finish. Although they’re pretty durable, the crankset and the pedals are not meant for pedaling while standing up, though. The pedals are made from tough thermoplastic material with a metallic center. They have weight elements to always self-level if you remove your feet from them. They also have adjustable straps which is a plus in case you may need to completely secure your feet during each ride.
Last but not least, this pooboo exercise bike integrates a belt drivetrain. It uses a poly-v belt highly resistant to stretching that provides excellent traction. This type of transmission comes with several advantages. For example, the belt does not require lubrication so you won’t have to take the drive unit apart every month for this. It also generates slightly less vibration than a chain.
Resistance system
The pooboo D720 upright bike is equipped with a manual magnetic resistance system. This being said, you don’t need an adapter for it or an external power source. But on the other hand, the bike cannot adjust the resistance automatically.
The resistance system consists of an internal magnetic brake attached to the flywheel system and to the tension knob visible on the front mast of the bike. When you turn the knob, the brake moves closer or farther from the flywheel which increases or decreases the pedaling load.
Needless to say, the main advantage of the magnetic resistance system is that the brake does not touch the flywheel. Thus, there is no internal friction between the resistance elements and the pedaling motion is very smooth and quiet. Plus, you don’t have to worry about the wear and tear of the brake.
There are 8 resistance levels available on the knob. The first levels deliver a light tension, while the top, 7-8 levels give you the possibility to undergo more intense cardio training. But as a general idea, this exercise bike is not exactly meant for highly intense cardio workouts.
Fitness monitor
The pooboo D720 upright bike is equipped with a fitness monitor featuring an LCD display that tracks time, distance, total distance (odometer), speed, calories, and pulse. Speed and distance are shown in MPH and miles. The pulse reading function is grip contact only. Thus, the monitor can only read your pulse if you hold on to the integrated sensors. It cannot read pulse from a wireless transmitter.
The fitness monitor unit is very easy to use. It has three buttons: Set, Mode, and Reset. The Set button is for goal selection. The Mode button gives you the possibility to scroll through the workout metrics and select the one you want to view or select the Scan Mode which automatically rotates all the metrics showing each one for several seconds. And finally, the Reset button clears all the values on the monitor unit to zero.
The monitor unit does not have pre-set programs but does have goal functions for time, distance, and calories. If a goal is selected, it will count down from the selected value until it reaches zero. This way, you can push your limits with every workout.
The monitor unit is battery-powered. It begins to count calories, distance, etc, when you start pedaling. It also automatically turns off if it doesn’t detect any activity on the bike for more than four minutes.
One last notable feature with regards to the performance monitor unit included with this pooboo bike is the device holder. This consists of a small shelf and a large back support that can hold most tablets and smartphones. There are no AUX or USB ports to dock your device, though. Also, the unit does not have speakers or a fan.
Assembly and Maintenance
The bike’s drive and resistance elements come pre-assembled, attached to the base frame, and protected by the plastic side panels. Therefore, you only need to attach the two base stabilizers, the seat post, the seat, the pedals, the front mast of the bike, the fitness monitor, and the handlebar. This shouldn’t take more than 30-40 minutes of your time. All the necessary tools are included and the manual provides clear step-by-step assembly instructions.
For maintenance, you only have to keep the bike clean and periodically check for loose bolts and parts. The internal parts do not need any lubrication.
