Frame and parts

Needless to say, the machine’s frame is made of steel tubing, offering the sturdiness of a commercial elliptical trainer. It’s also quite heavy, weighing 212 lbs (96 kg) when fully assembled. This weight considerably adds to its overall stability. You can be sure that it ironman triathlon x-class 610 - ellipticalwon’t wobble or move around even if you engage in a more intense workout. But despite its weight, relocating it after you’ve finished your workout shouldn’t be too difficult as the front base integrates transport wheels. Thus, lifting it by its rear base, you will basically lift less than half its weight.

The base of the frame features 6 rubberized adjustable stabilizers, which offer the possibility to level the machine in case the floor presents irregularities. The rubber caps provide an excellent grip to the floor, thus it’s not necessary to place it on a mat. They also protect the flooring from damage.

The machine has a fairly large footprint, taking 70″L x 31″W (178 x 79 cm) of floor space, and the frame is not foldable.

The IRONMAN Fitness Triathlon X-Class 610 elliptical is equipped with a set of large, nylon-made, heavy-duty pedals, which can basically accommodate feet of any sizes. The pedals don’t have any adjustment system or suspension, however they do integrate cushions, which alleviate the impact on the ankles. The surface of the inner cushions is also ribbed, offering excellent adherence to your sports shoes.

The elliptical’s rails consist of two aluminium beams, placed over the rear steel tubes of the frame. Along with the rollers, they’re designed to minimize noise. The rollers integrate ironman triathlon x-class 610 - cushioned pedalssealed ball bearings, and feature a very sturdy polymer coating. Differently put, these rollers are made to last.

This elliptical machine features two sets of handlebars: mobile and fixed. The mobile bars have a rather simple design, but they do offer multiple grip possibilities, including rounded end caps for a more comfortable top-grip. The fixed handlebars integrate pulse sensors, the console being able to track heart rate if you hold onto them. Both types of bars are covered by a sheet of rubber foam, providing the required amount of comfort.

The joints between the machine’s arms and upright console post, and between arms and pedal bars, integrate heavy-duty ball bearings as well. Thus, the incidence of developing squeaking noises is minimal, while the motion is really smooth.

One last aspect to mention here regards the frame finish. All steel parts are powder coated with black, scratch-resistant and corrosion-resistant paint. However, even though the finish on the frame is highly durable, the machine is made for indoor use. If used outdoors, moisture may damage the console and internal components.

Stride and step-up height

As we’ve mentioned above, the IRONMAN X-Class 610 elliptical trainer doesn’t have an incline system, which is quite a minus for a machine within this price range. Its stride is non-adjustable, and fairly long (23 inches / 58.4 cm) for shorter users. It’s actually designed for users between 5’2″ and 6’5″ (157 – 196 cm).

At their closest point to the floor, the pedals stand at approx. 10″ (26 cm) above floor level, while at their highest point, they supply an elevation of the user of approx. 16″ (41 cm). Therefore, in order to eliminate any ceiling height issues, make sure that the ceiling in the room where the the machine will be in use is at least 20″- 22″ inches higher than your own weight.

Resistance and drive

This IRONMAN Fitness elliptical trainer features an eddy current resistance system. In other words, in order to benefit from resistance on the pedals, you must connect it to a 110v power circuit. The unit comes with an AC adapter, which connects to the front part of the machine.

The resistance system consists of a magnetic flywheel, and a small servo motor which ironman x-class 610 - magnetic resistance systemadjusts the magnets’ pull, increasing or decreasing drag. Resistance can only be adjusted from the console, and in case you’ll be using one of the on-board fitness programs, resistance will be adjusted automatically. This elliptical trainer offers 32 distinctive levels of resistance, and the top ones do provide a consistent workout.

As the attached photos suggest, the IRONMAN X-Class 610 is a front drive elliptical. But as opposed to other models, the riding feel is “horizontal” and does not resemble a soft climb.

The pedaling motion on this particular elliptical can be characterized as very smooth and quiet, as the transmission between the pulley and the flywheel is done via a belt, not a chain. The flywheel is perimeter weighted, balanced, adding smoothness to the pedaling motion. The pulley is actually bigger in diameter than the flywheel, integrating two extremely solid crank arms, able to hold users up to 325 lbs (147.4 kg).

The Q Factor is narrow, only 6″ (152 mm), which is quite a plus. That’s because your feet will rest on the pedals in their normal position, without being too far apart, which may cause extra lateral stress on the knees.

Reverse pedaling is also possible, aspect which puts some diversity within the workouts that can be performed on this machine. When pedaling in reverse the console will continue to track time, distance, calories etc. Also, when pedaling in reverse, the machine continues to maintain its current resistance setting.

Console and accessories

The console unit supplied with the IRONMAN Triathlon X-Class 610 elliptical trainer is quite similar to the unit for the X-Class 410 recumbent bike. It features two LCD displays, with LED backlight which offers better readability in case you want to keep the lights off in the room where you’re exercising. The lower display keeps track of your workout ironman triathlon x-class 610 - bluetooth compatible consoleparameters, such as RPM, time, distance, calories burned, and heart rate. The top display shows the segments of your current workout.

The console has 12 segment-based pre-set workout programs and 4 user profiles, allowing you to create your own programs and save them for later use. The user profile modes require your age, gender, height and weight in order to determine better your workout values. The console also provides 4 target heart rate zones for 55%, 75%, 90% and TAG (custom), and a Recovery (Fitness Test) program.

One of the best features of the elliptical computer is its Bluetooth capability. You can actually connect the console unit via Bluetooth with your Android or iOS device, and use the free IRONMAN fitness app or other apps on line, in order to keep track of your progress, setup workout goals, or simply to benefit from a more high-tech user interface for your workout data.

In terms of amenities, the X-Class 610 console integrates quite several. First of all, it has a sound system consisting into two speakers, compatible with most MP3 players, smartphones or tablets. The sound rendered is not bad, considerably superior to the sound supplied by the speakers in most smartphones and tablets. The bottom of the console integrates a cooling fan, which is not extremely great, but still, does provide a bit of cooling in case it’s needed. The mid section of the console features a tablet rack, which can accommodate just about any tablet.

Apart from the amenities integrated in the console, this elliptical machine comes with three other accessories. One is the bottle holder, which connects to the console post. The second one is a 122 kHz heart rate chest strap transmitter, which communicates with the console wirelessly. And the third is a waterproof mat, for floor protection and noise level reduction.

Assembly and Maintenance

This elliptical trainer does require some assembly. However, the most problematic parts come already assembled. In other words, the motor, the magnetic flywheel, pulley and all the other internal elements come ready-assembled, and connected to the front part of the frame. So, in terms of assembly, you will first have to attach the front base stabilizer, then connect the two main pieces of the base frame. Next, you will have to attach the console post, assemble the arm bars and pedal bars, and finally add the console, connecting its wires. The manual offers excellent step-by-step guidance for this, and all the tools required are included. Assembly may take up to one hour and a half.

Maintenance requires keeping the elliptical’s rails free of any small objects that may cause damage to them or to the rollers. Also, in case the joints develop squeaky noises, lubrication is required.
