Although the Diamondback Fitness 510UB upright bike has been around for a while (the first models were released in 2010), it’s still available to this day, and continues to benefit from excellent users from all over the U.S. It’s an exercise bike designed for home use. It has a lighter capacity than the Diamondback 910UB, but it’s still a sturdy fitness machine, with a construction similar to gym-grade bikes.

Since it’s an older bike model, its console does not have online connectivity, nor it is compatible with any online fitness apps. However, the console does offer a wide array of programs and other features to keep you motivated.

Frame construction

The Diamondback Fitness 510UB upright bike features a very durable frame, made of ovalized steel tubing for extra sturdiness. All the steel parts are double coated with a corrosion-resistant and scratch-resistant paint. The color used is metallic gray, while the seat adjustment bar features a chrome finish.

The bike’s construction does integrate several durable ABS parts, though. Among them, we can count the covers of the flywheel and drive elements, the pedals, and several other small covers.

Like most other upright bikes, the Diamondback 510UB is not an extremely large trainer. With the frame fully assembled, it takes only 41″L x 23″W (104 x 58 cm) of space. It is recommended, though, to leave a clearance of at least two feet all around it for ease of access and operation.

Although it’s not extremely heavy, the bike does weigh 76 lbs (34.4 kg), which is more than twice the average weight of a road bike. This weight adds stability to it, plus, both its base tubes are equipped with adjustable stabilizers; therefore, you can perfectly level it on any type of floor. Also, its front base features a set of large silicone wheels which considerably ease its relocation if needed.

Seat and handlebars

The Diamondback Fitness 510UB upright exercise bike is equipped with a 4-way adjustable seat. Its upright post has more than 10 adjustment holes, while its front-to-back slider offers several extra inches of travel. This being said, the bike can accommodate users between 5’2″ and 6’5″ (158 – 196 cm). It is also sturdy enough to support users up to 300 lbs (136 kg).

The saddle itself is considerably wider than most spin bike seats. It has a layer of cushioning and a contoured surface to provide extra comfort. It’s also a standard saddle with a simple connection system to its slider; therefore, if you want a different seat, compatible options are widely available.

Compared to other upright exercise bikes, the Diamondback 510UB features a considerably superior handlebar. To begin with, it has a multi-grip design, among others offering a simple horizontal grip and a racing grip. Its grips have a thick layer of rubber foam for extra comfort, perspiration absorption, and hand adherence. The bottom grips integrate metallic pulse sensors, so by holding on to them, the console can track your heart rate. However, as opposed to the handlebar of the 910UB model, this one doesn’t have elbow rests.

The handlebar is angle-adjustable. It has a small knob at its base, which gives you the possibility to tilt it upward or forward. In case you’re wondering, at its highest position, its top reaches approx. 58″ (147 cm) above floor level.

Resistance and drive

The Diamondback Fitness 510UB is equipped with an eddy current magnetic resistance system. This being said, it needs to be connected to a power source in order to make available the resistance levels. The power adapter is included.

The bike’s resistance system consists of a small motor and a magnetic brake. The resistance adjustment can only be done from the console. As you select a certain level of resistance, the motor adjusts the position of the brake element in relation to the flywheel. This increases or decreases the intensity of the magnetic field, which results in more or less resistance.

The bike makes available 16 levels of resistance. The first 3 levels deliver a very light resistance, perfect for recovery training. Conversely, the top 15-16 levels simulate a steep climb, offering the possibility to perform a more intense workout.

The bike features a belt drive system, using a durable poly-v rubber belt. This being said, the bike’s operation is extremely quiet. Also, as opposed to a chain drive, it doesn’t require lubrication, and the internal vibration is almost inexistent.

The internal flywheel is a mid-range type with a weight of 14 lbs (6.3 kg). As opposed to spin bike flywheels, it is not perimeter weighted, but it is well-balanced, providing a smooth pedaling motion. Also, its weight does provide a pretty consistent momentum.

The bike features a 3-piece durable crank, with solid steel crank arms. Although they may support the full weight of the user in a standing up pedaling routine, this is not recommended. This is an upright bike made for seated workouts, not spin workouts, and pedaling while standing up may result in internal damage.

The pedals are made of durable nylon material. They feature a non-slip surface and adjustable straps. They’re weighted, so they will always turn face-up when you remove your feet from them. They also have standard threads, so you can easily find compatible replacements for them.

Console

The console is identical to the one included with the Diamondback 510SR recumbent bike. It features a 7-inch LCD display with blue LED backlight which considerably improves its readability. It’s divided into multiple sections. The top panels show the resistance level, total time, segment time, and watts. The bottom panels indicate distance, calories burned, RPM, and speed. The mid-section shows your heart rate and the profiles of the workout program in use.

The console is not telemetric; differently put, it cannot read your pulse via an HR chest strap transmitter. Therefore, if you want to use an HR program or want to keep an eye on your pulse during exercising, you will have to hold on to the sensors integrated into the handlebars.

For speed and distance, both standard and metric units are available. There also are two user profiles available. Each user can input their data, including name, age, weight, workout time, and gender. This way, the console can calculate the amount of calories burned by each user more accurately.

As we’ve mentioned above, the bike doesn’t have online connectivity, nor it is compatible with any online fitness apps. However, its console offers 20 workout programs to keep you motivated. They are divided into five categories: Strength, Hill Climb, Interval, Fat Burn, and Heart Rate.

The Strength programs are designed to gradually increase the resistance aiming to help improve the user’s strength and endurance. The Hill Climb programs simulate climbing exercises featuring preset hill profiles. The Interval programs offer profiles of high exertion alternating them with periods of rest. These are also great programs to build stamina. The Fat Burn programs are designed to maintain a relatively low level of exertion over the course of the workout. Keeping the heart rate at the lower range encourages weight loss. The Heart Rate programs offer the possibility to select a certain HR interval, and the console will auto-adjust the resistance depending on your pulse, in order to help maintain you within the selected HR interval. Of course, there is also the Manual program which allows you to adjust the resistance as you like during your workout.

Among the non-fitness features offered by this console, we can count a sound system, a cooling fan, a docking bay for a phone or tablet, a USB port, and a reading rack.

The sound system consists of two small speakers placed on the lower part of the console. It is compatible with most MP3 players, tablets or smartphones. However, the unit doesn’t have volume controls so you will have to adjust the volume from your device.

The top docking bay for a tablet or phone has the audio jack for the sound system and also a USB port. The USB port is only for charging your phone or tablet; it doesn’t offer the possibility to save your workout data on a USB stick for transfer.

The cooling fan is placed at the bottom of the unit, between the two speakers. It has an adjustable fan louver which allows you to adjust the angle of the airflow. Finally, the bottom part of the console is equipped with a magazine or book holder. It can be folded/unfolded up.

Assembly and Maintenance

The core of the bike comes pre-assembled. You only need to attach the base bars, the console mast, the seat bar, the seat, the handlebar, the console, and the pedals. This shouldn’t take more than an hour. All the tools required for the assembly are included. Also, the provided manual offers clear step-by-step assembly instructions.

The bike’s internal parts don’t require any maintenance. Therefore, the only maintenance that you have to carry out is keeping the bike clean and periodically re-tighten the crank arms or other parts if they come loose.
