The main item of fitness equipment that we’re going to review here is the Body-Solid GPR378 power rack. But this is actually a home gym set that includes a lat attachment with its weight plate stack, a heavy bench, and also a leg developer for the bench. A squat bar with Olympic plates is not included with this package, though. For reference, the addon part numbers of the items included with the power rack are GLA378 (lat attachment), GFID71 (bench), GLDA3 (leg developer).

Power rack

As we’ve mentioned above, the main component of this home gym system is the Body-Solid GPR378 Power Rack. This strength cage features a high tensile steel construction with 3″ x 3″ 11-gauge base and upright tubes. It has an all-4-side welded construction, offering extreme sturdiness and commercial-grade quality.

The main frame of the unit features an electrostatically applied powder coat finish which is highly resistant to abrasion, chipping, and corrosion. The colors used are gray for the main frame of the cage, while the safety and lift-off bars are painted black.

The upright columns of the power rack feature 20 adjustment positions for the safety bars and lift-off bars. The distance between the adjustment holes is 3″ (7.6 cm). Also, the weight capacity of the spotter bars and lift-off bars is 800 lbs (362.8 kg).

The base of the power rack is not equipped with adjustable stabilizers, nor it has any holes for anchoring it to the floor. You can improvise and drill holes into it in case you want to attach it to the floor, but this will void its warranty. However, it’s a pretty heavy unit itself, to which the weight of the stack is added, so it shouldn’t have any stability issues.

The top front part of the rack features a pull-up/chin-up bar. Its surface is knurled in order to provide a secure grip.

In terms of dimensions, the rack itself has a footprint of approx. 49″L x 46″W (125 x 117 cm). Its height reaches approx. 80″ (203 cm), which means that the unit can fit in a room with a 7′ (213 cm). However, if placed in a room with a 7′ ceiling, the remaining clearance above will be only 4″ (10 cm) which may not be enough for performing chin-ups correctly. Also, in case you’re wondering, the rack itself without any additions weighs over 100 lbs (45 kg).

Bench

The bench included with this power rack is the Body-Solid GFID71. It’s built on a 2″ x 3″ heavy-duty steel frame and has a weight capacity of 1,000 lbs (~453 kg). Its back and seat pads lock into 8 distinct positions offering the possibility to perform inclined, horizontal, and decline exercises.

The dimensions of the bench are 70″L x 28″W x 19″H (178L x 71W x 48H cm). This being said, the rack with the bench assembly requires a workout area of at least 7′ x 6′ (213 x 183 cm). Also, the 19″ (48 cm) height of the bench refers to its horizontal position. When the backrest is set to its maximum incline position, the highest point of the unit is approx. 50″ (127 cm).

The base bars of the bench don’t include adjustable stabilizers, but they do rest on rubberized pads which improve its grip on the floor and its stability. Also, its rear part is equipped with transport wheels in order to improve its relocation if needed.

The bench is equipped with 2¾” thick DuraFirm™ pads which are designed to never bottom out. Also, its upholstery is made of durable vinyl material which can last a lifetime with proper care.

The front section of the bench can take various attachments such as a preacher curl pad, or leg developer. In fact, two attachments for the front part are included, these being standard T-Bar Leg Hold Down for abdominal exercises and the GLDA3 leg developer. Both these attachments are equipped with 4″ foam rollers which provide optimal comfort for the legs. Also, the GLDA3 leg developer attachment is equipped with a Standard 1″ diameter bar for Standard weight plates, but you can always add an Olympic adapter to it in order to load it safely with Olympic (2″) plates.

Lat attachment & weight stack

This home gym system also includes the Body-Solid GLA378 lat attachment. This additional workout station includes 20 cast iron weight plates, 10 lbs (4.5 kg) each. The fact that the plates are made of cast iron and not vinyl/cement or vinyl/sand combo, such as for the Marcy MWM-988 home gym, is quite a plus. The iron plates are highly durable, can take a lot of abuse and with proper usage, they can last a lifetime.

The top stopper plate of the stack also weighs 10 lbs (4.5 kg); thus, the total weight of the stack is 210 lbs (95.25 kg).

As opposed to other lat attachments included with various home gyms, the GLA378 also features two 1″ diameter side pegs which can be loaded with Standard weight plates, or, if you opt for an Olympic plate adapter, you can also use Olympic plates on them safely.

The lat attachment unit is equipped with several fiberglass reinforced nylon pulleys. They integrate heavy-duty ball bearings in order to provide a smooth operation. Also, the included cables are nylon coated and aircraft quality rated for 2,200 lbs test.

Last but not least, the lat station includes standard lat bar with curved grips and a short, low row bar with straight grips. Both bars have their grip points covered by a layer of rubber foam material in order to provide optimal comfort.

Of course, some of the exercises that we have mentioned here require accessories that are not included. For example, all dip exercise require dip bars which do not come with this power rack. Also, keep in mind that an Olympic or Standard barbell with weight plates are not included. You will have to use your own.

Assembly & Maintenance

Considering that this gym system includes three main parts, the power cage, the lat attachment, and the bench, the full assembly will take more than two hours. It’s also recommended that the assembly is done by two people. The included manuals provide very clear assembly instructions, though, and considering that the machine doesn’t integrate a large number of pulleys and cables, the process is pretty much straightforward. Tools for assembly are not included. You will need two adjustable wrenches, a Phillips screwdriver, and a rubber mallet.

Once the machine is assembled, maintenance doesn’t require much. It is recommended to periodically check for loose bolts and parts. The guide bars of the weight stack should be periodically lubricated in order to provide a smoother action. The pulleys may also require lubrication.
