The ProForm ZT4 treadmill is quite similar in specs with the ZT6 model. However, the ZT4 offers a smaller tread belt, deck only has one suspension cell, a slightly less powerful motor, and only 16 workout apps. Differently put, it’s not exactly a treadmill for distance running training. But it can still support running workouts, actually offering various training possibilities.

Frame

The ProForm ZT4 treadmill features a precision welded, steel frame. Actually, the only two metallic parts in the frame construction of this machine that require to be connected via proform zt4 - deck folded upbolts, are the console masts. Connection is done with 3 bolts on each side, which provides the required sturdiness. The joints don’t have plastic cover such as the ones for the ProForm ZT6 treadmill. All the steel parts are coated with anti-corrosive, silver paint. Currently, this machine is available only in black / silver colors.

This ProForm treadmill features a folding design. The deck folds up and connects to the left console mast via a pin. This machine does not have a hydraulic unfolding system like the more expensive treadmill models though, such as the Sole F80 for example. When unfolding the deck, you’ll have to hold it and lower it yourself.

When the deck is folded up, the machine reduces its length by over half, remaining at a footprint of approx. 30″L x 33″W (76 x 84 cm). When the deck is unfolded, the machine has a footprint of 65″L x 33″W (165 x 84 cm), which makes it a bit bulky for a small apartment or room. But in general, if compared to commercial grade treadmills such as the Sole TT8 for example, this one is considerably smaller.

The front metallic base of the frame rests on 4 non-adjustable, rubber stabilizers, while the rear of the deck features two wider feet, made of hard plastic. The rear of the metallic base integrates caster wheels, making it easier to move the machine. The treadmill is meant to be moved when folded though. It’s a rather heavy machine, with an assembled weight of 158 lbs (cca 71 kg).

Deck and tread belt

The ZT4 treadmill features a 2-sided, 3/4″ MDF phenolic deck, durable enough to support users up to 300 lbs (136 kg). But considering that its walking belt is only 50″L x 18″W (127 x 46 cm), and its 2.5 HP motor, this is actually a treadmill made for walking and jogging. proform zt4 walking beltHowever, since it can supply speeds up to 10 MPH, running is still possible on it. However, running on this treadmill is not recommended for users above 250 lbs. The specified 300 lbs maximum supported user weight is actually for walking workouts.

The treadmill is equipped with a 1-ply (2 layers), commercial quality, stretch resistant belt. As we’ve mentioned above, its dimension suggest that this is a walking / jogging treadmill. Thus, for walking and/or jogging, just about any user, regardless of height and inseam length, should be able to use this treadmill with no problem. But for running, users above 6’1″ (185 cm) may feel a bit crammed on this machine.

The deck uses high-grade crowned rollers, which supply an excellent grip on the walking belt. They also integrate industrial quality ball bearings, which actually enables the rollers to be functional for a lifetime of use.

Last but not least, the deck of this ProForm treadmill integrates one cushioning cell. Evidently, this adds a bit of flexibility and shock absorption to the running surface, promoting workouts with a considerably lower impact than walking, jogging or running on asphalt or concrete.

Incline

The ProForm ZT4 features a motorized incline system. This means that the incline is adjusted exclusively from the machine’s console. It has an incline range between 0% and 10%, which can considerably expand the workout possibilities. It can be adjusted in increments of 1%, gradually, of via the quick keys from 0 to 10. Or, if you’re going to use one of the on-board programs, the machine will adjust incline automatically.

The treadmills step up height is approx. 8″ (20 cm). Incline will also add a few inches. Thus, add at least 15″ (38 cm) to your own height, in order to determine the required ceiling height for you, to use the machine safely.

Motor

This treadmill model features a 2.5 HP motor which can supply speeds up to 10 MPH. It’s powerful enough to support running, but keep in mind that it’s not a continuous power motor, like the one supplied with the ZT6 model, and may overheat during prolonged running sessions.

Just like the incline, there are keys on the console for quick and gradual adjustment. The gradual adjustment keys have short and long press functions. By pressing one key shortly, speed adjusts in increments of 0.1 MPH, while if pressing and holding the key, speed will adjust in increments of 0.5 MPH.

Evidently, since it’s a motorized treadmill, it requires to be connected to a power source. To be more specific, it requires a 120-volt nominal power circuit. The machine comes with 4′ (122 cm) of power cable, and a 3-prong standard plug. It also features an On/Off switch.

Console

Compared to the console units on commercial treadmills, the one supplied with the ZT4 ProForm is rather basic. However, along with the fitness functions, it does integrate several amenities. First of all, it has a sound system consisting of two speakers, compatible with mostproform zt4 treadmill console unit MP3 devices. Therefore, if earbuds may become uncomfortable during workout sessions, you can still keep your music close, and listen to it via the integrated speakers. A fan with 2 speed settings is another feature to mention. And finally, the console has a media tray to place your tablet or phone, along with 2 other, accessory compartments, one on each side.

The display of the console can track values such as distance, time, calories and heart rate. Distance is measured in MPH, and there’s also a track function, which displays distance in 1/4 miles (400 m), indicating how much you have completed from the current track, and how many tracks you have completed. Naturally, the display also indicates the current speed and incline level. Speed is measured in MPH. Pulse can only be tracked via the EKG grip sensors integrated in the transversal handlebars of the machine. The console is not telemetry enabled, in other words can’t read pulse via chest strap transmitters.

Last but not least, the console features 16 preset workouts, which will adjust incline and speed automatically, if used.

Assembly and Maintenance

The deck, including the motors come ready-assembled, and attached to the metallic frame of the treadmill. Thus, for assembly you basically need to attach the console masts, and the console with the handlebars. This task shouldn’t take more than 45 minutes. It requires two people though, since the machine is heavy. Also, in order to achieve maximum stability for it (since it doesn’t have adjustable stabilizers), it’s best to place it on a mat.

A hex key required for some of the screws is supplied with the machine, but you’ll also need your own Phillips screwdriver. The manual supplied provides quite comprehensive step-by-step instructions for the assembly.

Maintenance requires you to keep the belt clean, free of any dirt, lint or other objects that might be pulled into the motor. It’s pre-lubricated with high-grade lubricants, so it shouldn’t require any lubrication for a long while. However, if the treadmill is used for several hours a day, periodical lubrication may be required.
