Frame construction
The FBSport indoor cycle features a pretty standard triangular frame made of oval steel tubing. All the steel parts are coated with a black, rust-resistant paint finish. The only exception is the flywheel which is chrome-plated.
The bike also integrates several plastic parts, but these have a cosmetic or protective purpose, so they don’t reduce the bike’s overall sturdiness. The most notable ones are the covers of the drivetrain, the brake cover, the device holder, and the side covers of the flywheel. They’re all made from durable ABS polymers.
The FBSport bike is not a large fitness machine. With all the parts assembled, it is only 40.1″ (102 cm) long, and 22.6″ (57 cm) wide. You should leave at least two feet of clearance all around it, though, for easy access and correct usage. This being said, the recommended usage area for this bike is approx. 90″L x 70″ (228 x 178 cm).
The bike is pretty heavy. Its gross weight (while packaged) is approx. 91 lbs (41.2 kg). Therefore, its transport may require two people. However, once the bike is assembled, it can easily be moved by only one person. That’s because its front stabilizer features two transport wheels. Also, both base stabilizers have adjustable levelers.
Seat and handlebars
The FBSport indoor cycling bike is equipped with a four-way adjustable seat (up, down, front, back). Its upright post has several adjustment positions and offers an adjustment span of approx. 6″ (15 cm), with a maximum height of 38.5″ (98 cm). Therefore, the bike should be able to accommodate comfortably users between 5’1″ and 6’4″ (155 – 193 cm). It is also rated for a maximum weight limit of 264 lbs (120 kg).
The included saddle is pretty large as well, considerably thicker and with extra cushioning as opposed to the standard slim race bike seats. It is approx. 10″ (25.4 cm) long, and 7.3″ (18.5 cm) wide. It has a median groove for improved breathability and also has suspension springs at the rear which enable it to adapt better to your movement during seated workouts.
The bike is equipped with a multi-grip handlebar. It offers the possibility to adopt a standard grip, a climbing grip, and an off-road grip. It also has a loop bar in the middle which allows for a close parallel grip or an aero grip.
The bike’s handlebar is covered by a layer of rubber foam material for improved contact. Its side grips integrate metallic pulse sensors. As opposed to the seat, it is only two-way adjustable (up, down). It offers an adjustment span of 2″ (5 cm), from 43.3″ above the floor, to 45.3″ (110 – 115 cm).
Resistance system
The FBSport exercise bike is equipped with a standard friction resistance system which requires manual action. This being said, you don’t need a power cord or an external power source for this bike. But on the other hand, the included fitness monitor does not play any role in the bike’s resistance adjustment. It does not control the brake.
The bike’s resistance system consists of a felt pad brake attached to the frame above the flywheel. The bike’s tension adjustment knob is connected to the brake pad. Therefore, when you turn the knob clockwise, the brake pad applies more friction to the flywheel which increases the pedaling difficulty.
The bike’s resistance system does not have any pre-determined levels. You simply tighten the brake until you get the desired pedaling difficulty. You can basically tighten the pad up to the point you can barely pedal, and a workout with this tension level can simulate a steep hill climb.
The tension adjustment knob has an emergency brake function as well. You can press it down to stop the flywheel from spinning. Also, the brake pad may require lubrication from time to time, so that the flywheel can spin smoothly if the brake is tight. A few drops of silicone lubricant should be enough for this.
Drive system
The FBSport indoor cycling bike is equipped with a 35 lbs flywheel, similar to the Advenor bike. It is a perimeter-weighted flywheel made of steel alloy with a chrome plating finish and side ABS panels. Its perimeter-weighting is meant to provide extra inertia which is great for spin workouts.
The flywheel is bi-directional. This means you can pedal in reverse. However, as is the case for most other spin bikes, coasting is not possible. That’s because the pedals continue to spin for as long as the flywheel is spinning, regardless of the direction you’ve been pedaling.
The bike is equipped with a heavy-duty crankset. It features long, flattened crank arms made of steel alloy, similar to road bikes. These are painted black. The included pedals are made of aluminum alloy. They don’t have a paint finish. They are equipped with adjustable toe cages but do not have SPD elements for spin shoes. But nonetheless, their threads are standard 9/16 so you can always find compatible pedals if you want to replace them with SPD types.
The bike’s drive system uses a poly-v belt designed for improved traction. It’s also highly resistant to stretching and abrasion. Since it’s a belt and not a chain, you don’t have to worry about its lubrication. It also generates less vibration than a chain drive system.
Fitness monitor
The FBSport indoor cycling bike is equipped with a fitness monitor that offers a few more features than the average basic model. To begin with, its LCD display can show two workout metrics at once. It tracks time, distance, total distance, speed, calories, and pulse.
The speed and distance values are shown in metric units and they cannot be changed to English units. The pulse reading function is grip contact only. This being said, the monitor unit can only track your pulse if you hold on to the integrated sensors. It cannot communicate with a wireless heart rate transmitter.
The monitor unit does not have pre-set programs or online connectivity. It also isn’t compatible with any fitness apps. However, it offers the possibility to select workout targets for time, distance, and calories burned. If a target is set for any of these metrics, the monitor will count down from the selected value.
The monitor unit is pretty easy to use. It has three buttons. These are Set, Mode, and Reset. The Mode button allows you to scroll through the workout metrics and select the one you want to view. This way, you can also select its Scan Mode which puts the metrics on a sequence, showing each one for a few seconds. The Set button covers the goal-setting function. And finally, the Reset button clears all the data on the monitor except for the odometer (total distance).
Finally, the monitor unit is battery-powered. It requires two AA batteries which are not included. It begins monitoring your data when you begin pedaling or when you press one of the buttons. It also automatically turns off after a few minutes of inactivity on the bike.
Assembly and Maintenance
The main body of the bike comes pre-assembled. The flywheel, the crankset, the brake, and the belt are already assembled as well. You only have to add the two base bars, the seat post, the saddle, the handlebar post, the handlebar, the pedals, and the fitness monitor. This shouldn’t take more than an hour of your time. All the necessary tools are included and the manual provides clear assembly instructions.
For maintenance, you only have to keep the bike clean and periodically check for loose parts. The belt doesn’t require lubrication. The brake pad may require lubrication with silicone lubricant, and once it wears out, you will have to replace it. However, it should last for at least a year even if the bike is used for a few hours daily.
