The DT Plus 1409 is one of the rowing machines released in 2019 by Stamina Fitness. It’s pretty similar to the Stamina DT 397 model that we’ve already covered here, but it comes with an automatic magnetic resistance system and a different console with multiple workout programs. For reference, this is the Stamina rower part number 35-1409A.

Frame construction

The Stamina DT Plus 1409 rower combines steel, aluminum, and thermoplastic parts in its construction. The rear stabilizer and the front frame section that holds the resistance elements are made of steel. The machine’s rail is made of extruded aluminum. The guards of the resistance system are made of durable thermoplastic material.

All the steel parts are coated with a corrosion-resistant paint finish, black in color. The rail has its own natural polish, while the plastic covers are black, white, and blue for an extra aesthetic touch.

The rower isn’t too large. With all the parts assembled, it is 66″ (168 cm) long, and 22″ (56 cm) wide. Its rail is approx. 40″ (101 cm), so the machine should be able to accommodate users up to 6’3″ (190 cm) with no problem, allowing a complete range of motion. The rail is also pretty durable, rated for a maximum user weight limit of 250 lbs (113 kg).

The machine’s frame is not foldable but can be stored vertically, resting on its front stabilizer and the small bumper at the top of the front unit. In vertical position, its footprint becomes 35″L x 22″W (90 x 56 cm), while its height reaches 66″ (168 cm).

The rower isn’t super heavy either. Its net weight is approx. 50 lbs (22.6 kg). This being said, it can be carried and assembled by only one person. Once it is assembled, it can be easily moved via the small wheels integrated into its front base bar. Also, both its base bars have adjustable levelers.

Seat and other parts

The Stamina DT Plus 1409 rowing machine is equipped with a pretty standard seat. Its top is made of high-density foam material for improved comfort. It is also contoured to provide a better positioning for the user. It is approx. 14″ (35 cm) wide, so it provides plenty of contact surface. Also, its height is approx. 15″ (38 cm).

The base of the seat is steel-made. It integrates two sets of wheels that slide through the side grooves of the rail. The wheels have sealed internal ball bearings for a smooth motion and a thick silicone rubber layer on the outside to reduce noise.

The machine’s pulling handle is a simple short steel bar. It has foam sleeves for a more comfortable grip. It does not integrate pulse sensors or resistance controls, but the rower’s console is telemetric and can read your pulse if you wear a 5 kHz chest strap. The handle is attached to a heavy-duty nylon strap highly resistant to abrasion. Since it’s a strap, not a chain, it does not require lubrication and contributes to the overall smoothness and quietness of the ride.

The Stamina DT Plus rower is equipped with two large footrests made of durable thermoplastic material. They have heel guards and adjustable straps so you can perfectly secure your feet on them. They’re placed slightly lower than the rail, so the form is a bit different than for a standard rowing machine as your legs will be slightly inclined forward when completely extended, not fully horizontal. This is not necessarily bad, as the machine still provides an excellent full-body workout, but a professional athlete may need a rower that promotes a perfect form.

The machine’s footrests have a pivoting design. This means they can tilt forward during the push phase, in order to adapt better to the movement of your feet. They have heel stoppers, though, so they won’t tilt back past an angle of approx. 40°.

Resistance system

Just like the Stamina DT 397, the DT Plus 1409 model combines air resistance with magnetic resistance. The main resistance-generating element is a large 12-blade fan integrated into the front unit of the machine. As you pull the handle, the fan spins inside its casing and generates air resistance.

The rower’s air resistance system is complemented by an eddy current resistance system. It comes with an adapter and you will have to connect it to a power source in order to use it. This allows you to increase or decrease the overall resistance.

The eddy current resistance system consists of a small servo motor and a magnetic brake connected to an internal metallic flywheel. The motor connects the magnetic brake to the console. Thus, when you adjust the resistance, or when the program in use automatically adjusts the resistance, the brake covers more or less from the flywheel which increases or decreases the workload.

The machine makes available 16 levels of magnetic resistance. The lowest level provides fairly low resistance, great for anyone who wants to regain their stamina, or for recovery training. Conversely, the 16th tension level gives you the possibility to burn more calories or benefit from a more consistent workout during arm exercises.

Needless to say, since the rower integrates an air resistance mechanism, it provides a dynamic response. This means the resistance depends on your stroke rate. For example, if you row at a faster pace, the fan will also spin faster inside its casing and generate more resistance. This is up to a point, similar to the sensation of rowing a real boat through the water.

Console

The Stamina DT Plus 1409 rower is equipped with a console similar to the Stamina 1130 magnetic rower. However, since it’s a newer version, it offers more workout programs. To begin with, it has the Manual (M) program which simply monitors your data as you row, without adjusting the resistance. Next, there are 14 pre-set programs. These have different segment layouts. Some of them have an interval layout, others progressively increase the resistance until the end, while others focus on helping you burn more calories.

There is also a competition program and a target heart rate program. The competition program offers the possibility to compete with the computer on a 4 km / 10 minute race (these values can be changed). The HR program automatically adjusts the resistance depending on the selected target heart rate. Needless to say, this program requires you to wear an HR chest strap transmitter (not included). And finally, the console also has 4 user profiles. Each user can create and save their own workout preferences.

The console unit features an LCD display with LED backlight. It tracks time, watts, pulse, SPM, strokes, distance, and calories. Its bottom section also shows the program grid. The distance is shown in metric units.

The console does not have any Bluetooth connectivity, nor it is compatible with any fitness apps. It starts up when you begin rowing and automatically turns off after four minutes of inactivity on the rower. When it enters its sleep mode all the function values are reset to zero.

Assembly and Maintenance

The front unit of the rower comes pre-assembled. Therefore, you only have to connect the front stabilizer, insert the seat on the rail, connect the rail to the front unit, add the rear stabilizer, the footrests, and the bottle holder. This shouldn’t take more than 30-40 minutes of your time. The manual provides clear assembly instructions and all the necessary tools are included.

Once the machine is fully assembled, you don’t have to worry too much about maintenance. It is recommended, though, to keep the rail clean to prevent any damage to the seat or its rollers. It’s also recommended to periodically check for loose bolts and parts.
