The GoElliptical V-450X is a newer version of the V-450 that we’ve already reviewed. It offers a slightly longer stride than the previous version, a console with a larger display, and improved ergonomics for the handlebars. It’s a cross-trainer with a fairly decent construction, but nonetheless, it’s a model designed for home use, not a commercial model.

Frame construction

The GoElliptical V-450X cross trainer features a durable steel frame with large ABS covers for the base section and the resistance elements. All the main frame steel parts are double-coated with a corrosion-resistant frame, gray in color. The only exceptions are the adjustable bars of the moving handlebars which have a chrome finish.

The fully assembled machine is fairly large. It is approx. 61″ (156 cm) long, and 28″ (71 cm) wide. Plus, it is recommended to leave at least 24″ (61 cm) of clearance all around the unit for ease of access and safe usage. This being said, it may not fit too well in a small room or apartment.

The V-450X cross trainer is also fairly heavy. Its net weight is approx. 139 lbs (63 kg). This weight and the unit’s low center of gravity provide excellent stability. But due to this weight, the transport of the boxed unit should be done by two people. Once the trainer is fully assembled it can easily be relocated by only one person as the front base has a set of transport wheels.

This GoElliptical cross trainer is equipped with two sets of handlebars, one fixed, one mobile. As we’ve mentioned above, the design of the fixed handlebars has been improved over the last version. They’re closer to the user an offer a more comfortable hand positioning. They still have the built-in resistance adjustment controls and pulse sensors.

The moving arms also feature grips with a softer angle in order to provide a more comfortable arm positioning and posture. They have rock-climber grips at the top as well. They also have three height-adjustment positions which basically change the front angle of the pedals.

The pedal bars are pretty durable. Both the bars and the pedal trays are sturdy enough to support users up to 300 lbs (136 kg), which is a pretty impressive weight capacity for a machine made for home use.

Elliptical path, stride, and step-up height

The GoElliptical V-450X is a rear-drive elliptical trainer with a fairly large crank wheel. Due to this fact, its elliptical path is slightly inclined forward. Therefore, the ride resembles a descent on a soft ramp.

The machine doesn’t have an incline system. However, the angle of the pedals can be changed by adjusting the length of the moving arms. Not all ellipticals have this feature so it is quite a plus.

The trainer’s pedals are large enough to accommodate athletic footwear of all sizes. They’re also equipped with size adjusters, one for each pedal. These elements can be attached in eight positions to the large ribs of the pedals, four at the rear, four at the front. They act as supports or stoppers for your feet on the pedals allowing a more stable footing closer to the front or to the rear of the pedal.

This GoElliptical cross trainer offers a stride of 18″ (43 cm). Therefore, it should be able to accommodate comfortably users up to 6’2″ (188 cm), promoting a satisfying range of motion.

Last but not least, the pedals are at approx. 6″ (15 cm) above floor level when at their lowest position. Conversely, their highest point is at approx. 16″ (40 cm) above floor level. This being said, the pedal step-up height is somewhere in between, at approx. 10″ (25 cm). Therefore, it’s best to use the machine in a room with a ceiling that is at least 20″ (51 cm) higher than your own height.

Drive and resistance

The GoElliptical V-450X trainer is equipped with an eddy current resistance system. This being said, it requires an external power source (an adapter is included with it). It also means that the resistance adjustment is automatic; if one of the console programs is in use, the machine will auto-adjust the load depending on the current segment of the program.

The trainer’s resistance consists of a magnetic brake and a servo motor. As you adjust the resistance from the console, or as the console automatically adjusts the resistance, the motor changes the magnets’ pull on the flywheel, which adds or reduces the machine’s workout load.

Just like the previous version, the V-450X cross trainer model offers 24 resistance levels. The first levels deliver a fairly light pedal tension, great for muscle toning or recovery training. The tension levels above 20 are fairly tough, promoting a more intense workout for a higher burn.

The GoElliptical V-450X cross trainer integrates an inertia-enhanced flywheel offering a 44 lbs (20 kg) load and a speed ratio of 1:12.7. The flywheel is also bi-directional. In other words, you can pedal in reverse if you want, so you can put more diversity into your workouts.

Like most other ellipticals or exercise bikes with a magnetic resistance system, the V-450X is equipped with a belt drive system. This means you don’t have to go through the hassle of lubricating its transmission. Also, the pedaling motion is very smooth and whisper-quiet.

Console

As we’ve mentioned above, the GoElliptical V-450X cross trainer features a larger display console than the previous model. But nonetheless, it has a similar design, with a rotary knob for tension adjustment, and controls for the Pulse Recovery, Start/Stop, Restart, and QuickStart.

The unit’s display is divided into several sub-sections in order to show as many workout metrics at once, so you won’t have to use a scan mode to rotate them. It tracks time, distance, speed, RPM, calories, and pulse. The larger display shows the grid of the program in use.

The console is not telemetric. This means it can only track your pulse if you hold on to the sensors integrated into the fixed handlebars. It is not compatible with any wireless HR transmitters. It also doesn’t have online connectivity. But as opposed to the older version, it has a USB port so you can connect your phone or tablet to recharge its battery.

The console offers 24 preset programs. Each program has its own specific. Some are designed to help you burn more calories, others are interval-based, and others focus on your heart rate. Plus, the Random program provides a different profile whenever it is launched, this way offering something new for each one of your workouts.

A Recovery Function is also available. It has its own quick key on the console. It should be initiated at the end of your workout and requires you to hold on to the pulse sensors. This way, the console will count your pulse recovery after the workout, and based on the result, it will give you a fitness rating between F1 (excellent) and F6 (poor).

Two other notable console features are the integrated sound system and the tablet (or device) holder. The sound system consists of two speakers placed at the bottom part of the console. They give you the possibility to play the music from your smartphone, tablet or MP3 player through the console, for a slightly improved (stereo) sound quality. The tablet holder consists of a small shelf placed between the console controls and its LCD display.

Assembly and Maintenance

The main body of the GoElliptical V-450X cross trainer comes pre-assembled. All the drive and resistance elements are already attached to the base frame and covered by the ABS side panels. However, the rest of the machine does require user assembly. Basically, you will have to attach both its base bars, the pedal bars, the pedals, the front main mast, the moving arms, the fixed handlebars, and the console. This may take up to two hours of your time, but the task is far from being complicated. The manual provides clear assembly instructions and a basic toolkit is also included.

Drive-train lubrication is not necessary for this elliptical trainer. So, in terms of maintenance, you only have to check for loose bolts and parts, and lubricate the joints in case they begin to squeak.
