The Stamina 35-1413 air rower is a newer version of the ATS 35-1405. Evidently, it’s also part of the ATS series. It features the same design, construction, and dimensions, but has a slightly better fitness meter and a different paint finish. It’s a machine designed for home use but does offer excellent sturdiness. So, if you’re looking for a more affordable alternative to the Concept2 Model D, this Stamina rower is definitely a decent choice.

Frame construction

The Stamina 35-1413 features a full-steel construction. Differently put, both its main rail and the front part of the frame are made of steel tubing. Its rail and seat assembly are rated for a weight capacity of 250 lbs (113 kg) which is not bad for a machine intended for home use.

All the steel parts in the machine’s construction are coated with a rust-resistant paint finish. The rail and the front part of the frame that sustains the fan are painted black. The base stabilizers are white, these being the colors characteristic to this model.

With the frame fully assembled, this Stamina rower is fairly large. It is approx. 78.5″ (199 cm) long, and 19″ (48 cm) wide. Also, its highest point is given by the top of the flywheel casing, which stands at approx. 29″ (74 cm) above floor level. But nonetheless, the machine is foldable. The fan section can be folded back over the rail reducing the unit’s overall length to approx. 45″ (115 cm). The folded unit cannot be stored vertically, though, like water resistance rowers such as the FDF Cambridge, for example.

The fully assembled unit is not extremely heavy. It weighs approx. 63 lbs (28.5 kg). This pretty much means it can be assembled with no problem by only one person. Once the unit is fully assembled, it is very easy to move; its front base features a set of transport wheels. Also, its rear base features a set of adjustable levelers with large rubber pads which give you the possibility to perfectly stabilize the unit on any type of floor.

One last aspect to mention here regards the unit’s rail. It is fairly long, allowing a movement span for the seat of approx. 40″ (101 cm). This being said, it should be able to accommodate users up to 6’5″ (196 cm) with no problem, promoting a complete range of motion. Also, the rail is slightly inclined forward (by approx. 2-3 degrees); this feature promotes an easier recovery motion and a slightly more consistent workout for your legs during the push phase.

Seat and other parts

The Stamina ATS 35-1413 is equipped with a seat designed for optimal comfort and stability. To begin with, it is approx. 14″ (35 cm) wide providing plenty of contact surface. Its top is made of high-density foam so it’s not extremely hard allowing a better blood circulation during your workouts. It’s also contoured and provides excellent adherence preventing you from sliding backward.

The base of the seat is steel-made; it integrates three sets of wheels. Two are placed on top of the rail, the third is under the rail for extra stability. The wheels feature a rubberized outer layer and integrate sealed ball bearings for a smooth motion of the seat. Also, all the wheels are concealed by the side steel panels of the seat frame preventing them to catch your clothing.

The machine’s footrests are fairly large; they offer 6 adjustment position being designed to accommodate footwear of all sizes. They have rear guards and adjustable straps as well to maximize foot stability during rowing.

The footrests do not pivot as for other rowers such as the Tunturi R30, for example. They are attached to two metallic rods and set at an angle of approx. 50° for a comfortable foot positioning.

The rower’s pulling handle is a simple straight bar with rubberized grips. It does not integrate any pulse sensors or other accessories. It is attached to a chain similar to the ones used in bikes. Evidently, the chain requires periodic lubrication. But on the other hand, with proper care, it can last a lifetime, and even if somehow it sustains irreparable damage, it can be easily replaced.

Resistance system

The Stamina 35-1413 features a full air resistance system. This means it does not integrate any magnetic elements for increasing the overall rowing, nor it has a damper as the Stamina X AMRAP model. The resistance is solely generated by the spinning of the front large fan. Also, the resistance system is mechanical. You don’t have to connect the machine to a power source in order to benefit from resistance.

Just like any other air resistance rower, the Stamina 1413 provides a dynamic response during rowing. The generated resistance is proportional to the strength you put behind each stroke. In other words, the harder you pull, the more resistance you will get. This leads to a sensation similar to rowing a real boat through water.

The resistance generated by the unit’s airflow system is great for users of all levels, including professional athletes. Even if it does not have an adjustment system, it still provides a consistent, full-body cardio workout. Also, the noise generated by the fan during rowing is far from being loud, it’s not disturbing and shouldn’t cover the sound of your TV, for example. You can compare it with the sound generated by a large electrical fan.

Exercise meter

The fitness meter unit included with this Stamina rower does not offer any online connectivity features or built-in programs. However, it’s still a bit better than the average basic rower meter.

To begin with, it features an LCD display divided into three sections. The top section indicates the strokes per minute (SPM) and total strokes (Count). The middle section shows distance traveled and speed, while the bottom section shows time and calories. This being said, you can view at least three metrics simultaneously, while other units only show one. It does not have a pulse reading function, though, and the speed and distance are only shown in imperial units.

The meter is fairly easy to operate. It only has one button (MODE) which allows you to select between metrics for each one of its three windows. It also has a Reset function; you can press and hold it for several seconds to clear all the values on the display.

The meter unit requires two AA batteries which are included. It starts up when you begin rowing or when you press the MODE button. It also has a sleep mode to which it will enter after four minutes of inactivity on the machine.

Assembly and Maintenance

The fan assembly comes already attached to the machine’s rail. Therefore, you only have to connect the front stabilizer with the footrests, add the seat on the rail, and then connect the rear stabilizer and the meter unit. This shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes. All the assembly instructions are clearly described by the manual. Also, a basic toolkit is included.

In terms of maintenance, the periodic lubrication of the chain is required. Vacuuming the flywheel casing from time to time is recommended. It’s also recommended to periodically check for loose bolts and parts, and re-tighten them if necessary.
