Weight benches are some of the simplest, yet best workout equipment that you can acquire for your home gym. Depending on their structure and other accessories, they can help you develop more or fewer groups of muscles. But in general, a weight bench is an excellent choice for training your core and arms.

One of the most affordable weight benches that you can find at the moment, which also includes a curl pad and a leg development attachment is the Gold’s Gym XRS 20.

To avoid any confusion, the Gold’s Gym XRS 20 includes an adjustable weight bench, with a leg development attachment and a curl pad, but also comes with a squats rack, with safety bars for chest press exercises. The whole set does not include a barbell, dumbbell bars, or weight plates.

Squats Rack

The most important aspect regarding the squats rack that must be underlined here, is that it’s designed for Olympic 7′ bars. The distance between the upright posts of the rack is 41.5″ (105 cm) on the inside, and approx. 48″ (122 cm) on the outside. This means a gold's gym squats rack - xrs 20Standard, 6′ bar is too short for it, and its weight plate stoppers would fall on top, or in between the upright posts of the rack. Also, even though a 6′ bar would exceed the upright post, there’s won’t be too much clearance remaining for its sleeves to load it with several plates. So, as a small conclusion here, it’s best to opt for a 7′ Olympic bar for this rack and bench.

The squats rack included with the Gold’s Gym XRS 20 doesn’t have an extremely large footprint. It’s 32″ (81 cm) long, and 48″ (122 cm) wide, and when it comes to the space needed for its use alone, you won’t need much more than that, maybe one extra foot at the front. The upright posts are adjustable though, featuring 9 adjustment holes with approx. 3″ (7.6 cm) in between them. The bar’s maximum height is 64″ (162 cm).

The rack features two 9.5″ (24 cm) catch bars, with 4 attachment positions each. Also, it has two pegs for weight plate storage, with 1″ standard thickness are included with the set. The pegs attach to the rack at the rear.

Needless to say, the frame of this squats rack is made of steel tubing, coated with corrosion-resistant paint. It’s sturdy enough to support weights up to 300 lbs (136 kg).

Bench

The Gold’s Gym XRS 20 main component is the weight bench. Its frame is built from the same steel tubing as the squats rack, dyed with gray, corrosion-resistant paint. It features durable upholstery, made of synthetic material, with approx. 3″ (7.6 cm) of cushioning, offering all the comfort required for the available exercises.

Evidently, it’s an adjustable weight bench providing several positions, including incline, horizontal and decline. Its maximum incline position sets the backrest at an angle of approx. 70°, while the only decline position sets it approx. 5° under 180°.

This Gold’s Gym weight bench is quite sturdy, being able to support a total weight of 600 lbs (272 kg), or differently put, a maximum of 300 lbs (136 kg) of user weight, and 300 lbs (136 kg) of functional weight.

When it comes to dimensions, the bench is 72″ (183 cm) long, and stands approx. 22″ (56 cm) high, when adjusted in horizontal position. Its width measures 12″ (~30 cm), being wide enough to provide the required comfort and stability for all exercises. Also, considering that it stands 22″ above the floor level, shorter users, under 5′ may find it a bit difficult to touch the floor when performing horizontal presses. But as a general idea, the bench should fit users of all heights comfortably.

The bench comes with two main attachments: preacher pad, and leg development attachment.

Preacher pad

This workout station is evidently designed for preacher curls. It features the same upholstery as the bench, and it’s set at an angle of approx. 30°. The angle of the preacher pad is non-adjustable. However, its vertical post has 3 height adjustment positions.

A curved bar (or curl yoke) for preacher curl workouts is supplied with the package. This bar is pretty simple, featuring simple grips. Both the preacher pad and curl yoke are detachable.

Leg development attachment

This particular workout station offers the possibility to perform both leg extensions and leggold's gym xrs 20 - leg workout station curls. It’s actually the element that bears the weight attachment peg for the curl yoke as well. This peg is 1″ thick, designed for standard weight plates. However, the package also includes an adapter for it, which actually provides the 2″ thickness required for Olympic weight plates. Evidently, this part is also detachable, just like the preacher pad.

The leg attachment integrates three sets of padded rollers, to provide the standard comfort for leg extensions and curls. The padding on them is made of rubber foam material.

The weight limit of the leg attachment is 300 lbs (136 kg).

Possible Exercises

The main exercises that can be performed with this fitness equipment are:

  • Bench press
  • Incline bench press
  • Decline bench press
  • Dumbbell press
  • Incline dumbbell press
  • Decline dumbbell press
  • Preacher curl
  • One-handed preacher curl
  • Leg curl
  • Leg extension
  • Squat

However, considering that the lateral posts of the squats rack extend 64″ (162 cm) upwards, by placing an Olympic or Standard bar on top of these posts, you should also be able to perform pull-ups and chin-ups. Of course, for these exercises you will have to keep your knees bent.

Assembly and Maintenance

Although the assembly of this particular fitness equipment may take up to two hours, the process is pretty straightforward. The manual supplied provides comprehensive guidance for each assembly step. However, the tools required for assembly are not supplied. You will be needing two adjustable wrenches, one standard screwdriver, and one Phillips screwdriver.

Maintenance requires the periodic inspection of the equipment’s joints, and re-tightening the bolts and nuts if it’s the case. Also, if the mobile joint of the curl / extension attachment begins to squeak, a little lubricant should solve the problem.

The Pros

  • Sturdy construction for both rack and bench;
  • Preacher pad included;
  • Leg attachment station for leg curls and leg extensions included;
  • Adjustable squat rack included;
  • Thick and comfortable upholstery on the bench and preacher pad;
  • Adjustable bench, offering the possibility to perform incline, horizontal and decline exercises;

Summary

The Gold’s Gym XRS 20 is weight bench that comes with a squats rack, and also includes a preacher pad, and a leg workout station. It’s designed for medium range weight loads, being able to hold up to 300 lbs of functional weight (rack and curl pad), while the bench itself can hold up to 600 lbs. It offers the possibility to perform more than 10 types of exercises, for the development of arms, core, and leg muscles. And finally, considering that it’s available for less than $200, this particular fitness equipment offers excellent value for the price.

  1. I had to remove staples from INSIDE a threaded screw hole, the grease is missing and over-all this is not a job for one smaller person (5’4″) to do alone. Also you need a lot better tools than what they recommend – a ratcheting wrench and cordless drill are helpful. I was hoping this would only take a couple hours to assemble but it is taking a lot longer than that.

      Cordless drill is actually not recommended. Self threading screws can easily be stripped by using it. I assembled it in two sessions. Maybe 2 hours total taking my time.

    I found the Wieder XRS20 set which is the same one as the Golds. I bet that they are making them for Golds and Golds is private branding. I bought it for $174.00 online.
