If you’re looking for an affordable home gym, the XtremepowerUS 96138 is one to put on your list. It’s currently priced for less than $350, being in the same price and feature category as the Marcy MWM-6150 or the Gold’s Gym XR 55. It’s a lightweight home gym, definitely not professional users, but can definitely help you improve your overall fitness as it offers the possibility to perform more than 30 exercises.

Frame, parts & accessories

The XtremepowerUS 96138 features a durable steel frame, but since it has fewer workout stations than other home gyms, and only has a weight stack of 100 lbs (45.3 kg), it is lighter. However, it still weighs over 200 lbs (90 kg), and this weight provides plenty of stability.

The unit’s bases do not have adjustable stabilizers. They rest on plastic caps; therefore, it’s recommended to assemble and use the machine on a rubberized mat.

The maximum weight capacity of this machine is not specified. The seat is sturdy enough, though, to support users up to 300 lbs (136 kg). However, the preacher pad may not be suitable for weight loads greater than 100 lbs (45.3 kg), in case you want to use a barbell rather than the low pulley for preacher curls.

Since it’s a lightweight home gym, it is not extremely large. Its footprint is 68″L x 40″W (173 x 102 cm). It is recommended, though, to leave at least two feet of clearance on each, and at least three feet of clearance at the front, for safe operation and ease of access.

The machine’s seat and backrest are non-adjustable. They attach directly to the frame via screws, so you cannot change their height. They do provide excellent comfort, though, featuring 2″ (5 cm) of foam padding, and a durable vinyl upholstery. 

The XtremepowerUS 96138 features 11 pulleys made of durable nylon material. They’re equipped with industrial-grade ball bearings in order to deliver a smooth operation and a long lifespan.

The tensile strength of the unit’s cables is also not specified. But they’re definitely strong enough to support much more than the 100 lbs (45.3 kg) weight of the stack. They feature plastic covers in order to provide a better travel over the pulleys. Also, the frame design and the pulley placement doesn’t require any cable change for the usage of any of the machine’s workout stations.

There are three accessories included with this fitness machine. These are the lat bar, the short row bar, and an extension chain. Both the lat bar and the short bar feature rubberized grips for superior hand adherence and comfort. An ankle cuff for various leg exercises is not included, though.

Workout stations & attachments

The XtremepowerUS 96138 home gym features three main workout stations and two attachments. These are:

Chest & fly station. The machine’s front press has double functionality. It allows the execution of both chest press exercises and fly press exercises. It features two large foam roller pads for maximum arm comfort during fly exercises and multi-grips for press exercises.

High-pulley station. The high pulley station offers the possibility to perform pulldown exercises for the training of tricep, shoulder, and back muscles. As we’ve mentioned above, a lat bar is included with the unit.

Low-pulley station. This workout station offers the possibility to perform a wide array of exercises, such as stand-up curls, triceps kickbacks, squats, seated rows and more. The front part of the machine is also equipped with a foot plate, in order to provide maximum support for stand-up curls or rows.

Leg developer attachment. This attachment has a standard design. You need to connect it to the low pulley in order to benefit from the machine’s stack resistance. It allows the execution of leg extensions or standing up one-leg curls. Conventional, 180° leg curl cannot be performed on this machine since its integrated bench is non-adjustable.

Preacher pad attachment. The unit’s preacher pad offers the possibility to perform preacher curls. It’s non-adjustable, just as the seat. However, it does integrate a generous layer of padding and a durable upholstery for maximum comfort.

Weight Resistance

The XtremepowerUS 96138 is equipped with a 100 lbs (45.3 kg) weight stack. It consists of 9 main plates which weigh 10 lbs (4.5 kg) each, plus the top stopper plate which also weighs 10 lbs (4.5 kg). The weight adjustment is simply done via a selector pin.

The machine’s weight resistance ratios are not specified. However, the front press, the low pulley, and the lat station may deliver slightly more resistance than selected, but definitely not double.

The weight plates are made of concrete and encased in a vinyl shell. This type of weight stack is not as durable as a cast iron stack, such as the one on the PowerLine P1X, for example. But on the other hand, this is a home gym machine, and even if you will be using it daily, it won’t even come close to the wear and tear of a commercial gym, so the plates can last a lifetime. The vinyl/concrete stack is one of the main reasons this machine is considerably cheaper than any other model with a cast iron plate stack.

For maintenance, the pulleys may require lubrication from time to time. Also, it’s recommended to periodically check the machine’s bolts and parts, to make sure they still hold tight in their places.
